So, how do you strengthen your pitch-matching abilities? One method is simple aural drills. Start by playing a note on a piano to find your pitch. Sing along, and then subtly slide your pitch one way, and then back to the note. You’ll start training your ear to hear the varying pitches.
Next consider your nose, eyes, eyebrows, face, head and neck. Where are these positioned? Do they move? Are they relaxed? What happens if you raise your eyebrows? Close your eyes? Imagine your head has an invisible string lifting you straight up. Does it make a difference?

The next step is to learn to control your voice as you move from note to note. This is what allows you to sing a whole song and stay in tune with accurate pitch throughout. Without this skill you might sing your first note correctly but then hit the wrong note next or gradually go off key. The doctor will use a “Scope”- a little video camera on the end of a teeny cord- to determine if you have nodules or some type of tissue damage. Correct breathing for singers begins with a spontaneous open breath. Upon inhalation, if ones hands are placed on the stomach – an inch below belly button, the hands will be pushed out by stomach muscles. The singer’s shoulders should be relaxed and not move up. Neck and jaw should be relaxed. Jaw needs to be unhinged. Phonation begins with the movement of the stomach inward, where one is singing while pulling the stomach muscles in. This is called “singing on the breath.” The phonation ends with the release of the abdominal muscles. It’s important to note that phonation should be ended with the release of the abs and not in one’s throat, which is vocally abusive.
Start with a few simple things: pay attention to your nutrition and health in general, including eating well, staying hydrated, not smoking, and getting enough sleep. From there, watch how your health influences your singing.
The first part of knowing what group you belong in is your gender. If you are a female, then you are either an alto or soprano. If you are a male, then you are either a tenor or bass. The second part is how high or low your voice is. If you are a female and you’re more comfortable singing at a high pitch rather than a low pitch, then you are a soprano.
