Andrew, I don’t believe anyone can teach you how to sing. You have to teach yourself – the same way that you learned how to eat and speak and walk. You have to find your singing voice and then develop it – just like you found your balance on two legs and then learned how to run. Also you cannot be shy about it – it won’t work if you are.
For beginning piano students at the pre-reading level (ages 3-6ish) I like to use the Faber “My First Piano Adventure” series. I love that this series enforces solid technique in a fun, child-friendly way.
Many people have difficulty singing in tune at all, while others can start off okay but then can’t hold a tune or gradually start hitting wrong notes or wandering out of key. Although we would say that these people have a bad voice or are fundamentally a bad singer, this isn’t a permanent trait – it’s simply that they haven’t yet learned to sing in tune.
Let me offer a serious suggestion that has been a popular method of learning to sing for people for many generations: Attend church services on Sunday mornings at a Christian church and sing along with the hymns. Find a church whose congregation sings traditional church hymns from a hymnal book.

Most kids and teens get started singing naturally because they have an impulse. School districts or religious communities with choirs that practice 3-5 times per week are the best places to develop the young singing voice. This is where the young ear learns fundamental musicianship, harmony, counting, and staying in tune.
Keep in mind though not to practice for long periods of time. Aim for anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes each day, and stop practicing as soon as you start to feel vocally fatigued, or ideally right before.
I must say that, after just a couple of weeks of watching Aaron’s comprehensible videos and reading his amazing suggestions, I was able to spot an improvement in how my voice sounded – deeper, clearer, and perfectly confident.
Move on to thinking about the rest of your body. Where are your shoulders, back, arms, bottom, hips, legs and feet? All these body parts have an effect on your sound. Experiment by moving these body parts differently. What happens?

Hello, well I’m 17 and a dude and I really do love music and the way I can connect to it… but I also have severe anxiety and am so nervous about anything and everything…. I’ve been trying to teach myself to sing better and play a guitar but it’s way too much to teach myself…. any tips on here on where to go? I honestly Don’t Think I sound that great and I’m really Self concious about it But I Feel Like If I Had A Better Understanding of it all
Singing louder and singing softer should take the same amount of breath support, and vocal strain should not be experienced, either way. Using diaphragm breathing, these variations can be controlled throughout the song. Try alternatively bringing your right and left hands forward, one after and over the other. This technique is used to add volume to your voice to sing in forte or fortissimo.
This isn’t a “hearing test”, it’s not checking for hearing damage or age-related hearing loss. And don’t worry about whether you have a “musical ear” or not. The tone deaf tests which are well-designed don’t require any musical knowledge or skill. They test only the basic biological ability of distinguishing different pitches. You can be totally unmusical and still pass the test, because tone deafness isn’t actually about musical skill, it’s much more fundamental than that.

@bobobobo, I agree with you to a point. But you don’t want to wait long before seeking a lesson or three from a teacher. Certainly don’t begin heavy practicing in earnest without seeking a teacher’s advice. I don’t think it’d be good advice to NOT practice… but take it easy, so you don’t harm your voice. – Josh Fields Sep 22 ’12 at 0:06
Of course, depending on where you live and other restraints, you may have a limited number of options, and it’s entirely possible the above paragraphs don’t really apply to you. If that’s the case, do the best with whatever you can, but keep in mind if you really want to take your future career to the next level, you’ll need to find better Teachers, which is why many people travel for school. Your first Vocal Coach won’t necessarily make or break your future prospects, but you can still be picky.
I definitely understand where you are coming from. I couldnt hit high notes with good tone literallu a few weeks ago. Now that I know how to sing more correct I can definitely understand her anologies. Singing is hard to teach, I imagine because people are stubborn lol
Remember, learning to sing is like any other skill or activity, it takes time and practice. When you have a program like this one, you can drastically improve your voice because you can literally practice and learn whenever you want.
Try to extend the sound. Imagine the sound stretching or streaming out into the next room. How long can you sustain the sound? Notice that your stomach starts to tighten a bit – that is your diaphragm muscle kicking in to support the sound. Aim for holding the vowel sound for as long as possible while staying relaxed. Count in seconds in your head and keep a record of your progress.
