A proper warm-up is incredibly important before using your voice, as is staying hydrated at all times, which keeps your vocal cords from getting irritated. You also might notice specific foods that affect your voice. Some singers find that they don’t perform well after eating or drinking dairy, for example.
The key to this exercise is to make sure you are listening carefully as you practice. Don’t just rely on the tuner’s display. Try to always hear whether you are too high or too low before checking the display. That way you are gradually developing your own inner tuner so that in future your feedback loop can work directly without the assistance of a digital tuner.
Singing well involves the breath, the resonators of the upper face, and the muscles that you use to speak (in the lips, tongue, and jaw). Try looking at yourself in the mirror while practicing to make sure you aren’t doing any extra, unnecessary work.

Your voice is part of your whole body and it’s affected by the movement of surrounding muscles. You need to make sure your posture is correct, and that the supporting muscles, incuding shoulders and neck are relaxed and warm, otherwise you could strain your voice, and risk injury.

The Siren is a warm-up technique practiced by many professional singers, and is also a great exercise for beginners. Sing the sound over and over, producing the sound only through your nose. In order to check that you are doing it correctly, pinch your nose from time to time–the sound should stop completely when you do so.
Relax. Don’t discourage him from practicing “because he’s going to learn bad habits.” That’s like saying to a kid who wants to play basketball, “don’t practice before you make the team, because you’re going to teach yourself bad habits.” Actually having practiced before seeing a teacher will make what the teacher says make a lot more sense/have relevance/be easier to learn. – bobobobo Jun 3 ’12 at 1:37

If one’s musical ear is a contributing factor, one should do ear training for at least 5 minutes at day, focusing on melodic dictation.  Ear training of 5 minutes a day is more effective than 1 hour once a week. 
Some common mistakes to avoid are smiling while singing, under singing, over singing, pushing out too much air, and pushing beyond one’s natural range. These are common causes of damage of the vocal folds. Be cautioned of these.

So, we’re going to go sharp first. I’m going to sing ah (sings ah while varying pitch). Doesn’t sound so good. But that is important to determine that that is a sharp note. Now here’s a flat note. Here’s the center. (sings ah) Sounds flat, okay? So you can’t have good pitch until your ear hears the center of pitch and whether you are singing sharp or singing flat. That’s the first thing. And I recommend going to the piano, playing a note, and trying to hit the pitch. And then go slightly sharp, and then come back to the center, and then go slightly flat. Kind of like tuning a guitar string, how we would bring it in to the pitch.
Practice hitting the high notes. High notes are the icing on top of the cake: not always necessary, but really wonderful when done right. You probably already know your range by now, so you also know which high notes you can hit and which ones you can’t. Be sure to practice hitting the ones you can’t yet reach. Practice will make perfect.

During week 4, you will learn all the important factors about pitch. Learning how to sing on pitch is necessary if you want to become a professional singer. Autotune will no longer do the trick. A natural talent always shines through, and that is what everybody wants.
Note that if you feel any type if physical strain or especially to the extent of pain, stop practicing. This may be due to practicing these techniques in an incorrect fashion. Seek to speak with a vocal trainer, choral director, or a specialist of the vocal folds. They will be able to show you what is being done incorrectly, and offer insight for self-improvement.
There are numerous people within our world that absolutely love to sing and are grasped by the proposal of training their voice. The soft pallet should always be raised. The object is to leave as much hollow space on the inner part of your mouth, so as to produce a sound that is round and full. Lower your tongue, allowing it to rest on the bottom of the mouth. Elongate the jaw slightly. Your lips should form a small, round, circular, shape. Be sure not to open your mouth too much, as it may block the hollow passage of the roof of your mouth.

Hey Samuel, I listened to this from all the way in Australia. I thought it was well put together, the rhythm of the lyrics over the chords was great. I wouldn’t have had the lead guitar doodling in the verse tho. It didn’t seem well put together and the part before both singers dragged a little bit overall I thought it was pretty good and kept me entertained.
If you are just starting to learn the range and capabilities of your singing voice, you may develop bad singing habits or risk vocal damage by using it improperly. Fortunately, there are several easy vocal exercises for beginners that you can use to develop comfort and mastery over your own voice.
Raspy voices usually come from dehydration so be sure you get a lot of water! 8-10 glasses per day. Cracks happen from allergies and reflux. Stay away from acidic foods (orange juice, marinara sauce and fried foods are the biggest offenders.) Things that vocal coaches will always stress are vowels, enunciation, and breath control. You want to have tall vowels when singing. Put your pointer and middle fingers between your front teeth to give you an idea of how wide your mouth should be. Make sure to over-stress your words. The clearer, the better! When breathing, don’t breathe from your lungs, breathe from your diaphragm instead, near your stomach. Pretend you’re sipping in chocolate milk. That’s where you should breathe from.
People say they cannot identify notes to play or sing. We are going to help them to step in to the musical family. There are many who are not quite sure if they have built up their ears to sing or play or to identify the notes. I do not think you have toned-deaf. If I can sing and play you too can.
