This is as true when it comes to business or writing or almost any other field as it is for singing, and it’s important to keep this in mind when looking for a Vocal Coach. Would you rather train with someone who has spent many years exclusively teaching young people how to sing or with someone who was actually a professional Singer for many years and who then transitioned into being a Teacher or Professor? Ideally, your coach would have tons of experience in both roles, but that’s difficult to find and if you have to choose just one, go for the latter.

If you are beginning the search for a Vocal Coach, you are probably also just getting started as a Singer. I hate to say it, but there are a lot of shocks, surprises, and quite a few disappointments coming your way. It is simply the way of the world, and certainly of this business in particular.
Everyone would love to be able to sing one of these famous singer’s songs and hit every note, but most cannot. Instead, it’s important to understand your own personal range, and keep it in consideration as you’re warming up and selecting repertoire.
However in the US, unlike European nations such as Germany and England, the choir system for kids in school has been all but obliterated. Added to that lack, kids emulate the pop music they buy on CD, which doesn’t essentially develop a young voice properly. So we’re in a catch 22 about voice lessons and kids. But here are some guideposts:
Lip Trills: Release lip tension and connects breathing and speaking. Releases tension in the vocal folds. Place your lips loosely together release the air in a steady stream to create a trill or raspberry sound. First try it on an “h” sounds. Then repeat on a “b” sound. Hold the sound steady and keep the air moving past the lips. Next try to repeat the b-trill gliding gently up and down the scales. Don’t push beyond what it comfortable at the top or bottom of the scale.

This style of church music deliberately uses simple melodies in simple rhythms, with a narrow range of pitches that are easy for non-trained singers to sing. Once you get comfortable with it, you can try learning one of the four-part harmony lines in the hymn arrangements. This will be your introduction to harmonizing.

Hey Shane, I was following the program every day (it was rare that I skipped a day) for 8 weeks, while also singing some of my favorite songs in between on my guitar practice sessions. Starting from the 3rd or 4th week I started feeling the major improvement as well.
Humming: Highlights anterior frontal vibrations in your lips, teeth and facial bones. Begin with lips gently closed with jaw released. Take an easy breath in and exhale while saying “hum”. Begin with the nasal sound /m/ and gently glide from a high to a low pitch as if you were sighing. Don’t forget your vocal cool down after extensive vocal use. Gently humming feeling the focus of the sound on the lips is an excellent way to cool down the voice. You should hum gentle glides on the sound “m” feeling a tickling vibration in the lip/nose are.

Practice daily. Every day, practice your breathing exercises, warm-up routine, and recorded singing. Listen for parts that you don’t hit with your voice and keep chugging. It could take several weeks of practice just to get a single song down pat.
To be honest, when you’re hitting the higher notes, you should be shifting from your chest to your head voice anyway, so you asthma is less of a problem for higher notes and more of a problem when singing constantly low. Primatene tablets at Walmart (they’re behind the counter so you have to ask but they’re not prescription) before you sing for a long time will help a lot.

The Siren is a warm-up technique practiced by many professional singers, and is also a great exercise for beginners. Sing the sound over and over, producing the sound only through your nose. In order to check that you are doing it correctly, pinch your nose from time to time–the sound should stop completely when you do so.
Wait…I Know About Vocal Warm Ups, But What’s A Vocal Warm Down?! If you’ve read much of what I’ve written, then you know how important I think vocal warm-ups are. But what about vocal warm downs? What is that? And is it really important? And if so, what is the benefit? As you may know, ……
I liked the idea, but the execution is severely lacking in what could be considered instructional guidance. There is no description of what you are supposed to do or achieve in the exercises. There is no explanation of the score you recieve, or how to improve. The songs from which you chose your goal are very limited, and yet you need to have your own Spodify account to use the entire song. On top of that, the limited list doesn’t have a trade off, such as added lyrics to follow or well-separated vocal and backing tracks. When it’s time to sing with the music, you can barely hear the instruments. Very disappointing.

So, we’re going to go sharp first. I’m going to sing ah (sings ah while varying pitch). Doesn’t sound so good. But that is important to determine that that is a sharp note. Now here’s a flat note. Here’s the center. (sings ah) Sounds flat, okay? So you can’t have good pitch until your ear hears the center of pitch and whether you are singing sharp or singing flat. That’s the first thing. And I recommend going to the piano, playing a note, and trying to hit the pitch. And then go slightly sharp, and then come back to the center, and then go slightly flat. Kind of like tuning a guitar string, how we would bring it in to the pitch.
The first part of knowing what group you belong in is your gender. If you are a female, then you are either an alto or soprano. If you are a male, then you are either a tenor or bass. The second part is how high or low your voice is. If you are a female and you’re more comfortable singing at a high pitch rather than a low pitch, then you are a soprano. If you are a female and you’re more comfortable singing at a lower pitch, then you are an alto. If you are a male and you’re more comfortable singing at a higher pitch, then you are a tenor. If you are a male and you’re more comfortable singing at a lower pitch, then you are a bass.
Now let’s move on to what the different types of voices are. There are five general categories of voice types. Three are for men and two are for women. We’ll list each voice type here along with a short description of each.

Try to extend the sound. Imagine the sound stretching or streaming out into the next room. How long can you sustain the sound? Notice that your stomach starts to tighten a bit – that is your diaphragm muscle kicking in to support the sound. Aim for holding the vowel sound for as long as possible while staying relaxed. Count in seconds in your head and keep a record of your progress.
