Correct breathing for singers begins with a spontaneous open breath. Upon inhalation, if ones hands are placed on the stomach – an inch below belly button, the hands will be pushed out by stomach muscles. The singer’s shoulders should be relaxed and not move up. Neck and jaw should be relaxed. Jaw needs to be unhinged. Phonation begins with the movement of the stomach inward, where one is singing while pulling the stomach muscles in. This is called “singing on the breath.” The phonation ends with the release of the abdominal muscles. It’s important to note that phonation should be ended with the release of the abs and not in one’s throat, which is vocally abusive.

I still can’t get a vibrato working at all. I’ve been researching forever and just can’t figure out what’s wrong with me. Does my voice need to be stronger first before the vibrato will come? I feel like at the moment i’m simply practicing “laaa” repeatedly with no outcome. A lot of breathing exercises incorporate singing different sounds on pitches and working up and down the scale. Making sure you breathe from your belly and support your voice throughout the entire exercise is the key to power.
Now for your, starting to get a better sense of pitch, I want you start thinking of your notes as circles. You want to aim for the bullseye. The best way to do this and do it well is to record yourself and listen back. The first thing in determining whether you are singing on pitch is understanding whether you are singing sharp, on the sharp side, or the flat side of the note. I like to take it to the max first. Let’s sing at the center of pitch and then go outside of the pitch, so that you can hear that difference.

I’m on the same opinion as Tret. How would you know? Besides the fact that you’ll feel you’re doing much better when you’re singing, (I know I did and I’m pretty sure anyone else who would do it almost every day for two months would feel the same) you can record yourself singing a song now and then when you finish. It would be great to hear back what you’re thinking.

It’s extremely important to find a good voice teacher and to ask about an instructor’s training and background, because poor instruction or incorrect practice can actually ruin your voice. Singing should never hurt.
