As one of the top vocal coaches in the country, I frequently hear: “What are your top vocal tips for singers?” Well, I could rattle off a long list, and yammer on for hours. (I’m a nerd’s nerd when it comes to vocals…) And I have a long list of favorite tricks up my sleeve from more than 20 years of coaching singers… But I love a challenge – so I pretended that I had only 5 minutes to tell you my top ones and so I wracked my brain to come up with the Top 5.
Just bear in mind that HearAndPlay is very much Gospel & R&B/Soul oriented – this fact sometimes throws some people off. However, this does not mean that they only teach Gospel songs, so don’t run away scared now.

Try to extend the sound. Imagine the sound stretching or streaming out into the next room. How long can you sustain the sound? Notice that your stomach starts to tighten a bit – that is your diaphragm muscle kicking in to support the sound. Aim for holding the vowel sound for as long as possible while staying relaxed. Count in seconds in your head and keep a record of your progress.

My experience as a music instructor comes from years of offering private lessons as well as teaching for Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi and Middle Tennessee State University. I have a BM and MM from the University of North Texas. My practical experience can be found in years of live performance, a nationally di
Every singer has a range of notes their voice is physically capable of producing. There are advanced techniques and long-term training which can extend this, but as a beginner you want to make sure you stay comfortable in your “easy” range. As soon as you start stretching your voice too high or too low your pitching will suffer (and so will your listeners!)
Maureen has been teaching private voice and piano lessons since 2009, and currently runs her own studio, as well as traveling to students’ homes to teach lessons. She teaches anyone with an interest and willingness to learn, regardless of experience level.
All singing is produced on vowel sounds. Consonants don’t have pitch. Some consonants like M and N are produced through a pitched hum – but that is not exactly singing. You need to work on what goes on in singing vowel sounds with your body.
Practice your major scales, starting with the middle C, moving down in half-steps before moving up. Don’t push yourself before you’re actually singing, and try to move slowly. As you continue to warm up, you’ll get better at articulating all the notes in the scales.
Each voice type (soprano, tenor, bass, etc.) has a different vocal range associated with it. Simply stated, your vocal range is the span from the lowest note to the highest note your voice can produce.
First and foremost, I am a vocal performer myself, having performed in Italy, Germany, France, Sweden and Switzerland. The next time you sing an ascending vocal scale or you sing a high note,  try thinking of the way an elevator works. A heavy weight is attached to a  pulley and as the weight pulls down, the elevator actually goes up to the higher floors. So, the highest floor is reached when the weight is the heaviest. Similarly, you should think down for your high notes or think of adding weight (resistance) to your highest notes.
It happened to me when I first got to this point. It is normal to have some difficulty during the first five weeks so no need to worry. Just stick with it and you will be surprised with the major improvements in your voice.

Now for your, starting to get a better sense of pitch, I want you start thinking of your notes as circles. You want to aim for the bullseye. The best way to do this and do it well is to record yourself and listen back. The first thing in determining whether you are singing on pitch is understanding whether you are singing sharp, on the sharp side, or the flat side of the note. I like to take it to the max first. Let’s sing at the center of pitch and then go outside of the pitch, so that you can hear that difference.
