Then again, even someone with exceptional vocal teaching skills may choose to charge a lower rate because they want to give everyone the chance to take singing lessons, no matter what their finance situation is like. Think about your specific goals and intentions as you’re searching for your teacher, and what you need in a teacher. Think of yourself as an athlete and eat that way: an athlete wouldn’t stuff herself with food just before running the mile and neither should you. A full stomach inhibits the movement of the diaphragm-you’ll have difficulty taking in full breaths and you’ll be prone to burping. Don’t starve yourself, either–singing is hard work, you need fuel. A normal meal an hour or two (two is better) before a singing session works best. If you need to eat between sets go for non-bulky, easy to digest food. Before a show I like eggs–high protein, low density.
As I mentioned, in the beginning stages, before you’ve enrolled in a full-time singing or music college degree program, you shouldn’t have to spend too much of your hard-earned cash on vocal coaching. You’ll end up paying for exactly that once you are accepted into a university. If you have unlimited resources, go with a super expensive Teacher who has the prestige of once topping the charts, but if you’re not in the one percent and you need to watch where your pennies go (especially since you’ll likely be spending them later on anyway), it’s fine to look for someone who fits your limited budget.
Enter a local singing competition. Be reasonable about how you expect to perform; if you’ve been singing for less than 3 months and have no formal training, it’ll be difficult — but that’s what you want, right?

Practice hitting the high notes. High notes are the icing on top of the cake: not always necessary, but really wonderful when done right. your chest with both hands, then, raise your chest higher than normal. Take a breath in and then exhale, but don’t drop your chest. Sing one note and hold it as long as possible with your chest raised. Press on your chest halfway through the note (press kind of hard and raise your chest to meet the pressure). Relax the back of your neck and keep your jaw open as you’re singing “ahhh.” Imagine the air spinning around in your mouth while keeping your chin tucked down a bit and your chest raised. Keep in mind, overuse of vibrato is not a good thing in contemporary singing (pop, rock, and R&B). At the same time, no vibrato is also not a good thing. So, try ending phrases with straight tone, then into a little bit of vibrato. The bottom line is to do what’s best for you.

This is a quick trick that makes you sound better instantly. Say A-E-I-O-U (watch your jaw movement in the mirror). Did your jaw close on any of the vowels? Chances are your jaw closed on the E and the U – and most likely on others too, if not all of them. Take your first two fingers and pull your jaw down 2 inches (or even better – use a plastic bottle cap or a cork (wine) to prop your jaw open). And speak the vowels again. And repeat again (we’re trying to re-program muscle memory – so the more the better). Now sing the vowels on one pitch. A-E-I-O-U. Your goal is to keep your jaw open (long not wide) without closing for all of your vowels. Repeat until you can do it. Now sing a phrase of one of your songs – and make sure your jaw opens to the same position on all of your vowels. You have to practice this a bunch before it becomes natural – but the more you do, the sooner this new movement is programmed into your muscle memory. And, you might be one of those lucky ones who notice the improvement in the sound right away (it will sound louder and more resonant with less vocal strain). If you don’t – don’t sweat it – you will. It just takes a little practice. (You might have some unwanted tension in your neck, jaw and throat muscles – try loosening them up and try it again.) The next time you perform open your jaw more on your vowels — it’s a quick trick that makes you sound better instantly!
Confidence is vital for good singing, and the shortest way to get confident about your singing is to see proof that you sing in tune. That way you can step up on stage or join a choir safe in the knowledge that your voice will be in tune and you’ll sound good when you sing.

Sirens/Kazoo Buzz: Improves the resonant focus of the sound and continues work with maximal stretch on the vocal folds. The mouth postures are easily made by pretending you are sucking in spaghetti with an inhalation. On exhalation make the “woo” sound. It will be a buzz like sound. Hold the sound steady for 2-3 attempts. Now use the woo sound to go up and down the scales.
The A-O joint – Your very top vertebra, AKA the “atlas,” forms a joint with the bottom of your skull to support your head. Balance your head on this joint (the A-O joint) so that you are neither looking up or down. A properly balanced A-O joint reduces neck and jaw tension.

All singing is produced on vowel sounds. Consonants don’t have pitch. Some consonants like M and N are produced through a pitched hum – but that is not exactly singing. You need to work on what goes on in singing vowel sounds with your body.
In terms of memorization, think of a song in a simple sequence. If I were trying to memorize the pre-chorus of “Beyond Me”, I would think “first stars, then water, then need, then see.” I learn new songs in under a week this way. (And old songs in 24 hours on the high end.)

Lip Trills: Release lip tension and connects breathing and speaking. Releases tension in the vocal folds. Place your lips loosely together release the air in a steady stream to create a trill or raspberry sound. First try it on an “h” sounds. Then repeat on a “b” sound. Hold the sound steady and keep the air moving past the lips. Next try to repeat the b-trill gliding gently up and down the scales. Don’t push beyond what it comfortable at the top or bottom of the scale.
