In 2014 I worked for a few months in New Orleans – one of the world’s biggest music capitals. I decided that after years of playing music, it was a great opportunity to learn how to sing too. I was previously occasionally watching a couple of YouTube lessons about singing, but those never really make you stick to something because they lack a systematic approach. Anyway, I started taking singing lessons with a well-known local teacher.
So, how do you strengthen your pitch-matching abilities? One method is simple aural drills. Start by playing a note on a piano to find your pitch. Sing along, and then subtly slide your pitch one way, and then back to the note. You’ll start training your ear to hear the varying pitches.
Bottom line: It was nice and I did saw some improvement but after a couple of months and hundreds of dollars that were gone, I did not feel I was getting enough of the improvement that I was looking for, and it was way too much money anyways, so I decided to look for other methods. I turned online and researched the different singing courses that are available.

Fortunately there’s even a simple and fast way to check if you’re tone deaf. You can take an ear test online in just a few minutes and find out for certain whether tone deafness is responsible for your difficulty singing. The next thing with pitch is using the piano or using an instrument as a guide, which is really helpful. And the third thing is to sing a cappella a lot. But here’s the thing with that, if you’re going to sing A cappella, I’d like you to find what key the song is in and use an iPhone app or something, a piano app, to actually hit the note first for you, so that you are in the right key, if you are going to sing A cappella. And that’s a trick for singing a cappella songs in general. If you are going to go for an audition, you want to make sure that you don’t come in on the wrong note or in the wrong key, and then all of a sudden you are singing way higher than you need to. You want to be in the right key.

Arms – When you aren’t gesturing, you should be relaxing your arms at your sides. Don’t make fists, clasp your hands, or fidget with your clothes. This adds tension and makes you look (and feel) nervous.

Overall, you have to go through 31 audio vocal lessons and about 49 videos. Now, 80 lessons seems like a lot, but I strongly discourage skipping through any lessons. There’s a lot of work to be done. You may be missing out on some valuable information if you skip through one of the audio tutorials or videos.
The doctor will use a “Scope”- a little video camera on the end of a teeny cord- to determine if you have nodules or some type of tissue damage. He/she will also determine if you have an infection or allergy that has made your vocal cords inflamed. (Females with hormonal problems can have their vocal health yo-yo about.) The E.N.T. should check if you have GERD- acid reflux- where stomach acids are burning your vocal cords. Once all medical conditions are ruled out or treated, see a voice teacher who can evaluate if you are straining, if your song keys are wrong, and such. A.This diagnosis is best determined by a joint team of a medical doctor (an E.N.T. Ear Nose Throat Specialist) plus a voice teacher in that order. If nothing is wrong either place, you may have to trim your performance and practice schedules.

Keep in mind though not to practice for long periods of time. Aim for anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes each day, and stop practicing as soon as you start to feel vocally fatigued, or ideally right before.

So far I sing Fly Me to the Moon by Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra we’ll, still need to work on Dynamics, and Soft Attacks on the Power Phrases, but my instructor wants me to learn and practice Against All Odds, holy moly that song is very hard for me, not sure what is holding me back, I realized tonight that the phrases are a lot longer and there is less time to breathe in for the next one, any Suggestions ?? My mind is stuck in trying to impersonate the artist and duplicate their sound vs using my own natural voice.
I’m on the same opinion as Tret. How would you know? Besides the fact that you’ll feel you’re doing much better when you’re singing, (I know I did and I’m pretty sure anyone else who would do it almost every day for two months would feel the same) you can record yourself singing a song now and then when you finish. It would be great to hear back what you’re thinking.
