If you have taken lessons in the past and want to pick up where you left off, a more qualified (and thus pricier) teacher may be the better choice. You’re beyond the basics now and need to advance your voice beyond your comfort zone – so an experienced teacher is critical.
You have to work through the modules one by one. You need to practice for a while before you move onto the next module. The course duration is about eight weeks, but you will start to see improvements much sooner than that, just like I did.
In fact, if you’ve taken beginner voice lessons before, you may have been surprised by how slowly your voice teacher went at first. You may have examined your posture, done some warm-ups and breathing exercises, all before you started singing an actual song.
Lessons are usually held once a week, although advanced students may work with their teacher three times or more each week. A teacher is often primarily a voice technique teacher, who teaches you how to sing, or mainly a voice coach, who shows you what to sing to take best advantage of your voice.

The next time you sing an ascending vocal scale or you sing a high note, try thinking of the way an elevator works. A heavy weight is attached to a pulley and as the weight pulls down, the elevator actually goes up to the higher floors. So, the highest floor is reached when the weight is the heaviest. Similarly, you should think down for your high notes or think of adding weight (resistance) to your highest notes.
In addition to noticing your diaphragm move, think about your jaw, lips, tongue, cheeks and upper palate. Are they relaxed? What size and shape is the cavity inside your mouth? What happens to the sound if you change it? Make very small changes to consider the effects. Does it please you?
Singing is a much more complex art than it first appears. It is near impossible to learn proficiently when just singing along to songs or looking at online resources. Move on to thinking about the rest of your body. Where are your shoulders, back, arms, bottom, hips, legs and feet? All these body parts have an effect on your sound. Experiment by moving these body parts differently. What happens?

Who doesn’t want more power without strain? This is a simple technique to apply and a bit easier than the one above. All you have to do is to keep your chin pointed slightly down and your pectorals slightly flexed (well sometimes it’s a lot flexed) when you go for more power. Most singers reach forward or lift their chin up to sing with more power. While it may temporarily work, it causes vocal problems. Tipping your chin down not only works better and saves your voice – it actually SOUNDS better! Stand in front of the good ‘ol mirror. Sing an Ah scale up and down in one phrase (1-2-3-4-3-2-1). Press your chin slightly in (point your chin towards the floor) — usually only 1” or so. Don’t let your head bob up as you raise the pitch. Keep it firmly in place. Go all the way up the scale of your voice keeping this position. Notice how your chin wants to move up as you raise your pitch. Keep it planted. This will give you more power and control and eliminate strain. Practice it until it becomes natural!
3 bad habits to avoid would be: (don’t worry too much, though… a lot of good singers do this) Clearing your throat. It grinds your vocal folds together. (I’m guilty of that. 😞) Don’t even think about it. It makes you want to. Also, don’t sing way out of your comfortable range. Who isn’t guilty of this? Many popular male singers (me too) sing way higher they probably should. Don’t drink anything but water before, and don’t eat anything sticky/sweet before. It makes it harder to sing and reduces your vocal range.
Before you rush to figure out what type of singing voice you have, there are two things to keep in mind. Firstly, if you’re a male under 22, or a female under 20, then your vocal range is still developing and you won’t know your true voice type until you’re a little bit older.

Your chest voice is usually a deep sound produced at the lower part of one’s range. Head voice is softer and more gentle. Likewise, mask voice is a combination of the 2 and you can feel this vibration slightly below the eyes on the bones of your cheeks when you are singing in this register. Registers are simply the prospect of getting as many parts of your body in vibration as you sing. You will be able to know which register you are in because there is something called a “break” in your voice from one register to the next. Sing a note that is in the lower end of your range. As if a siren, move the pitch you are singing upward, allowing it to rise. If you go high enough, and depending on where you are with developing your vocal range, you will experience a “break” in the sound of your “siren” where the vocal sound gets cut off. This is natural, and we all have this “break.” The range of your voice before you reached this break was sung in chest register. The sound produced after the break in a softer voice was sung in head register. Mask voice, which is in between the 2 distinguishing principles, was sung throughout the median pitches of your given range, before you reached the “break” point.
