These virtuosos are a limited few and even they will have to someday think about what it is they are doing. For the rest of us in the world who simply want to sing, whether it is for a choir, family gatherings, religious ceremonies, or just while sitting around a camp fire, the ability to sing well can come with daily practice and exercises that you can do at home.
If you focus only on free lessons from YouTube, I guarantee you will get frustrated. Online lessons give you guidance in a step by step progression, allowing you to move from one exercise or technique to the next. You can’t find this for free on YouTube.

Recently after the band broke up, I decided to further my education and went to Musicians Institute in Hollywood California. There I was taught by the best guitar players in the world. Your voice is a delicate instrument. While a pianist can practice for hours upon hours every day, singers cannot. Why? Unlike other instruments, the entire vocal apparatus is a sensitive part of your body.
The key to this exercise is to make sure you are listening carefully as you practice. Don’t just rely on the tuner’s display. Try to always hear whether you are too high or too low before checking the display. That way you are gradually developing your own inner tuner so that in future your feedback loop can work directly without the assistance of a digital tuner.
So, how do you strengthen your pitch-matching abilities? One method is simple aural drills. Start by playing a note on a piano to find your pitch. Sing along, and then subtly slide your pitch one way, and then back to the note. You’ll start training your ear to hear the varying pitches.
I teach group lessons for newborn to 9 1/2 yrs: newborn – 18 mos, 18 mos – 3 1/2 yrs, 3 1/2 – 4 1/2 yrs, 4 1/2 – 61/2 and group Piano lessons for ages 6 1/2 to 9 1/2. Okay, let’s talk for a second about the two different types of vocal lessons. The first are vocal warm ups. These are great for the purpose they serve, which is to wake your voice up and prepare it for more strenuous activity—singing! They are great for maximizing your current vocal ability and range. Vocal warm ups can be compared to stretching before working out or before a race.
Instead of paying someone for a few in person lessons, you can sign up for an online course and have access to it 24 / 7.  The cost of 2 or 3 in person singing lessons is the same as lifetime access to an online singing course.
In any type of music, there comes a time when you want to belt out a more bold and powerful voice. The trick is to get that power without having to squeeze your neck. If you squeeze your neck and you have that tension, you won’t be able to do it consistently night after night.
Breathing is also an important factor in singing. You will produce a pleasant tone if you work with your breathing. Conversely, singing at the same time as you’re out of breath will result in you exerting too much tension on your voice and may eventually lead to injury. If you want to achieve an excellent tone when singing, then you must breathe deeply (don’t inhale with your mouth, rather use your nose) through your lower lungs and exhale using your nose and mouth. Breath support helps to prevent you from straining your throat, and thus enabling you to produce a pleasant tone.

Theory and Ear-training I feel are very important to learn when trying to understand music. It just gives you a basic mathematical way of understanding how music works. You can listen to a chord progression on the radio and go home and play it and also improvise over it.

Let’s start out by explaining what we mean by “not overdoing it.” With singing, how you practice matters just as much as what you practice. Our best advice is to practice singing healthfully. Singing healthfully, or singing without unnecessary tension or effort, will increase your stamina.
There are several great range exercises to try as you’re working on scales. These exercises should be part of your warm-up before working on an actual vocal piece. You can find many different warm-up exercises in between singing classes on YouTube.
Tone deafness is a real condition. It is part of a biological condition of the brain called amusia which encompasses a number of musical inabilities, including some related to rhythm rather than pitch. As part of amusia, tone deafness means that you are incapable of hearing the differences between musical pitches.
I start every lesson with vocal warm-ups. Then we learn different techniques to increase range, posture, and breathing.
