First up – Brett Manning’s great program. Renowned voice coach Brett Manning is responsible for training the likes of Taylor Swift and Paramore’s Hayley Williams. He is a respected individual within the music community and he also happens to be the brains behind the course. This app includes 12 CD’s that all come with 17 different voice lessons. They are also considered to be the program’s “meat.”
Before you rush to figure out what type of singing voice you have, there are two things to keep in mind. Firstly, if you’re a male under 22, or a female under 20, then your vocal range is still developing and you won’t know your true voice type until you’re a little bit older.

The best way to learn to sing is to regularly take classes or lessons from an experienced teacher who can give you the personal instruction and attention that you need to advance in your skills. Another important necessity is to be dedicated to daily practice. With both of these in your routine, your voice will grow stronger, faster.
In practice this means that if someone played two different notes on a piano, someone with true tone deafness would be unable to tell whether it was the same note or two different notes. Naturally, if that person tried to sing they would have real difficulty because their ears and brain wouldn’t have a clue if they were singing the right notes or not.
But vocal warm up exercises are not going to necessarily give your voice a breakthrough making it any better than its current ability. You’re not necessarily going to increase your range, be able to sing higher notes or sustain better pitch by simply doing vocal warm ups. That’s where vocal strengthening exercises come in.
Keep in mind that if you’ve never taken singing classes or lessons, you will have a much more limited range than a trained singer, especially when it comes to the upper range. So be careful not to wrongly label your voice as “low” until you’ve had some proper training.

Your posture is a key part of singing and breath-management. If you’re hunched over or sitting down or even just slouchy, you can potentially cut your breath support, and therefore your ability to sing well, in half. I won’t get into all the details of it here, but the basic idea is to keep your chest/sternum high and intake air so that your torso expands below the ribs, on your sides near your oblique muscles, and your lower back, not necessarily just in your belly.

In my voice lessons, students will learn proper technique in producing sound with their vocal chords. We focus on breathing and tone. Lessons will also incorporate ear-training and vocal exercises to expand vocal range.
I say the App is great! I hate how people are giving it one stars because it’s too “advance”. I mean, how? To me, it’s really easy actually. You press on a exercise and it gives you a task (it goes from easy to hard). If you did it great! Then you get 5, if you didn’t, you get a 1 (which s what I usually get because I suck at singing hence why I downloaded this). It even gives you tips, and tricks. I say my singing has gotten better. I would like if the graphics weren’t so 90’s looking, BUT its free lol.
Start by practicing with a backing track. You can normally find karaoke versions of popular songs on YouTube, or if necessary you can use the regular studio version, singing along with the lead singer. Begin with just a short section of the song, for example just the chorus.
You’ve learned all the basics, and you’ve been listening to all the greats for inspiration, but remember: you simply cannot expect to improve without regular practice! Practice singing everyday, if possible.
This isn’t a “hearing test”, it’s not checking for hearing damage or age-related hearing loss. And don’t worry about whether you have a “musical ear” or not. The tone deaf tests which are well-designed don’t require any musical knowledge or skill. They test only the basic biological ability of distinguishing different pitches. You can be totally unmusical and still pass the test, because tone deafness isn’t actually about musical skill, it’s much more fundamental than that.
If you’ve had trouble singing in tune or hitting the right notes when you sing, or somebody has made a comment about you having bad pitching or poor tuning, this is most likely the skill you need to focus on.
