You can be totally confident stepping up on that karaoke stage or singing with friends because you have proven to yourself very clearly that you do sing in tune and you can sing these songs well. Neck and jaw should be relaxed. Jaw needs to be unhinged. Phonation begins with the movement of the stomach inward, where one is singing while pulling the stomach muscles in. This is called “singing on the breath.” The phonation ends with the release of the abdominal muscles. It’s important to note that phonation should be ended with the release of the abs and not in one’s throat, which is vocally abusive.
Once you have healthful singing down, you can structure your practice sessions something like this. Start with a 20-minute warm up session to work on your breath support, low and high range, chest voice and head voice, arpeggios, diction, or vibrato.

Think of yourself as an athlete and eat that way: an athlete wouldn’t stuff herself with food just before running the mile and neither should you.
