Drink lots of water, take a bath, use tiger balm on your neck (have someone massage your neck muscles if possible) or go to an acupunturist and rest your voice. Then for warm up do the cool downs on The Singers Gift Warmups to thin out the vocal folds and reduce inflammation (the last exercise in the series!)
It was really hard to find anything bad to say about the course. If you want to learn how to sing – by all means you’ve found what you’re looking for. Thanks to technology that’s making stuff so affordable and accessible in our times.
You’ve probably heard that honey/lemon/and hot water are helpful if you have mucous in your throat. But remember that lemon is drying so don’t overdo it. I prefer gargling, here’s the best way: If your throat feels gunky and/or irritated: mix 1/4 teaspoon baking soda + one cup warm water. Take a small amount of fluid in your mouth and gargle at a high pitch-this causes your vocal cords to contract and rise closer to where you are actually gargling (your epiglottis will prevent the fluid from actually reaching your vocal cords). Spit and repeat several times.
If you are just starting to learn the range and capabilities of your singing voice, you may develop bad singing habits or risk vocal damage by using it improperly. Fortunately, there are several easy vocal exercises for beginners that you can use to develop comfort and mastery over your own voice.
Envision jumping as you hit the high note. Perhaps you’re jumping onto a trampoline, or maybe you’re just jumping up into the air. Imagine hitting your highest point as you reach the high note. Take an adequate breath and keep your mouth open. Hitting a high note doesn’t mean you need to increase how loudly you sing.

This is me singing Otis Redding on stage in St. Louis, Missouri. Would have never had the courage to do it before this course. Now I do this regularly – as you can see in the video example at the bottom of the post with a Bob Dylan cover I made.

Dude… this is fantastic and has helped me a TON! I want to major in music when I graduate high school and have been told that it is a good idea to get singing lessons before you audition for certain colleges… so maybe this could be my lesson 🙂 Thank you!!
There is a correct way to sing, and when you adapt correct technique your voice will flourish! You will develop a powerful, wide vocal range. Your tone will be thick and rich, consistent through your entire range. Which leads me to another point….

Singing with your head voice, singing with your chest voice and bringing them together in harmony are some of the techniques you will learn in Module 6. Blending these two different voices together and transitioning smoothly from one voice to the other are some of the important aspects you want to learn to become a better singer.
The best part about singing is that anyone can get started without any prior knowledge of music theory, structure, or history. But if you really want to set yourself apart from the crowd, learning music theory will help you become a more knowledgeable, well-rounded musician.

If you’ve had trouble singing in tune or hitting the right notes when you sing, or somebody has made a comment about you having bad pitching or poor tuning, this is most likely the skill you need to focus on.
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced singer, it will help you become an even better vocalist. The online course videos in SSM offer tons of theory and practical exercises that are suitable for any age and gender. It also offers supplemental worksheets to help you stay on top of your game.
The third module is all about improving your vocal tone. Module 3 will give emphasis on how to use your soft palate the right way. This module will also help you try to eliminate any nasal cavity problems you might have will singing. Since the nose resonates naturally, your nasal cavity affects your vocal range.
I’m not saying former professional Singers are the only instructors worth hiring but they have a very valuable skill set that others won’t have. It’s worth investing some time and energy into finding somebody who has earned their bread and butter with their voice as well as with their teaching.
Begin with the basic solfege (by sound) notes: “do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do,” while ascending the pitches along with a piano or keyboard accordingly. The object is to decline back down to the pitch “do,” by singing “do, ti, la, so, fa, mi, re, do.”
I have a degree in music from Abilene Christian University, and have been taking voice lessons since 2005. I have been teaching voice lessons for 2 years, and already I have seen many eager singers come through my door. My students have gone on to audition for and sing in school musicals, bands, and even karaoke in a restaurant! Many of my students take lessons solely to have fun and improve their voices, or even just their breathing. Within the first few lessons (if you’re practicing between lessons, of course!), you will start to notice an improvement in your breathing and as time goes on, you will reap the benefits in your singing! I teach any style of singing, especially opera and musical theater.
SSM wasn’t the first vocal training I bought or tried, but it was definitely one of my favorites. My voice improved so much while I was doing the exercises that I eventually stopped using it (bad idea).
I’m on the same opinion as Tret. How would you know? Besides the fact that you’ll feel you’re doing much better when you’re singing, (I know I did and I’m pretty sure anyone else who would do it almost every day for two months would feel the same) you can record yourself singing a song now and then when you finish. It would be great to hear back what you’re thinking.
There are several great range exercises to try as you’re working on scales. These exercises should be part of your warm-up before working on an actual vocal piece. You can find many different warm-up exercises in between singing classes on YouTube.
@naught101 My criticism isn’t on the contents of the book and I’m not addressing the possibility that it may be wrong, but rather on the presentation of the text (which is archaic and hard to read). Just try and read the text yourself. It’s not good studying to learn from something that’s hard to grok while there are much more suitable books out there written in modern English. That book is a piece of history that IMO is to be enjoyed by experienced musicians who really feel like a tour down history’s past, not something a beginner should learn from. – bobobobo Sep 23 ’12 at 14:28
During week 4, you will learn all the important factors about pitch. Learning how to sing on pitch is necessary if you want to become a professional singer. Autotune will no longer do the trick. A natural talent always shines through, and that is what everybody wants.
Deborah is an outstanding teacher with a passionate interest in the improvement and success of her students. Since working with Deborah, my voice is stronger, clearer, more flexible. I have greater control over my voice, and a much broader range..I have Deborah to thank for two musical theatre jobs this summer. I plan to continue taking singing lessons from Deborah for many years to come.
Have you ever wondered how singers such as Whitney Houston, Freddy Mercury, Maria Carey, Elvis Presley and Ariana Grande produce that beautiful sound? At “Beautiful Voice NJ” students learn everything from how to produce a gorgeous tone to how to gain ultimate pitch control. Every singer has a range of notes their voice is physically capable of producing. There are advanced techniques and long-term training which can extend this, but as a beginner you want to make sure you stay comfortable in your “easy” range. As soon as you start stretching your voice too high or too low your pitching will suffer (and so will your listeners!)
