Certainly, when you exercise, run, or play sports, a healthy warm up is a good way to prepare, improve your performance, and prevent injury to yourself. The same holds true when you use your voice. A short vocal warm up improves the quality of the sounds you make and helps prevent vocal injury, keeping you in good voice and making your voice production feel better. Many people use warm ups everyday. You should use vocal warm ups before vocally intensive activities like public speaking or singing, classroom teaching, or exuberant social events.
Vocal range goes hand-in-hand with vocal power. Once you get your breath support under control, you can begin exploring your range. The ability to relax your throat and support your voice will give you the power needed for the wider range in notes.
After you get a feel for your voice on single pitches or notes apply your knowledge to any song you know. Think about the vowel sound of every word sung and aim for the loveliest version of each one that you can muster. Sing a line at a time. Consider how you attack each word – particularly at the start of a phrase. Try to hit the opening note in the middle of its sweet spot. Also explore what it is to swoop up or down to a note – not always desirable but sometimes interesting.
You will learn how to eliminate tension through simple tips and techniques that will allow you to sing with more power and confidence. So I wanted to give them to you as if I was actually giving you a voice lesson, right here, right now. Stand in front of a mirror if you can, because I’m going to ask you to watch your jaw and your head position to control movement as you sing.
You won’t go to the hospital for drinking salt water. Salt is in everything. Sure if you drink it in an excessive amount you might get a little sick/dehydrated but that’s it. Other than that good tip for helping soothe a sore throat.
I offer private coaching to children, teens, adults who have an interest in acting or singing performance, and for those who simply have an interest in performing or speaking in front of others. In addition to coaching those who wish to better their skills in acting, voice and speech, and singing, I also offer coaching for non-actors; i.e., attorneys, business professionals, teachers, politicians, pageant participants, and other creatives, who want to improve their public speaking and communication skills.
According to a couple of websites, the best way to learn how to sing is with a vocal teacher, a recorder, and practice. But let’s say I don’t have the means to get a vocal teacher right now. What other resources are available to me that I can use to sound better?
First off – this is an expensive program, especially with the monthly payments. But this is a great program developed by Brett Manning, nonetheless. Singers such as Taylor Swift and Hayley Williams of the band Paramore are among those who were trained by renowned coach Brett Manning.
The next thing with pitch is using the piano or using an instrument as a guide, which is really helpful. And the third thing is to sing a cappella a lot. But here’s the thing with that, if you’re going to sing A cappella, I’d like you to find what key the song is in and use an iPhone app or something, a piano app, to actually hit the note first for you, so that you are in the right key, if you are going to sing A cappella. And that’s a trick for singing a cappella songs in general. If you are going to go for an audition, you want to make sure that you don’t come in on the wrong note or in the wrong key, and then all of a sudden you are singing way higher than you need to. You want to be in the right key.

Everyone has their own voice and whether we realize it or not, nearly all of us strive to find and develop it. Some studies have even shown vocal improvements among the tone deaf after working with a singing teacher! These studies prove that even if you think you have a terrible voice, you can in fact learn how to sing.

What I think about it: I really liked the structure of the course. It is very easy to follow and understand, it shows you a “course progress” bar, and every week I gradually felt how I was constantly improving and my favorite songs that I like to sing while playing guitar (from Beatles to Dylan to Coldplay, Rock, Pop, some Jazz) just began to sound much better. I also felt how I could sing for a longer time without feeling “worn out” on the inside of my throat, thanks to the good techniques and habits I learned.
+ They offer a bunch of follow up courses to take your singing even farther – my favorite was the “Superior Harmony” course where I learned how to sing along with other people, recognize different musical intervals that sound best when singing together, etc.
Two Octave Scales: Provides maximum stretch on the vocal folds. Start in a low pitch and gently glide up the scale on a “me” sound. Don’t push the top or bottom of your range but do try to increase the range gently each time you do the scales. Now reverse and glide down the scale from the top to the bottom on an “e” sound. You can try this on the “oo” sound also.
This isn’t a “hearing test”, it’s not checking for hearing damage or age-related hearing loss. And don’t worry about whether you have a “musical ear” or not. The tone deaf tests which are well-designed don’t require any musical knowledge or skill. They test only the basic biological ability of distinguishing different pitches. You can be totally unmusical and still pass the test, because tone deafness isn’t actually about musical skill, it’s much more fundamental than that.

I have taught acting to small children, teens, and adults in community, private, and collegiate settings. I taught acting at the legendary Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York City. For beginning piano students at the pre-reading level (ages 3-6ish) I like to use the Faber “My First Piano Adventure” series. I love that this series enforces solid technique in a fun, child-friendly way.
Lots of singers, even professionals, take singing lessons because they experience pitch problems. They are easy fixed with this vocal approach. If your musical ear is fine, the issue is with one or more of the following: 1. Lack of correct breath support. 2. Presence of moving vowels or lack of gradations. 3. Singing of improper or heavy consonants.

To practice tone and breath control, select a note that is easy and natural for you to reach. In a single breath, begin singing the sound and a soft, low volume. Gradually build up your volume until you reach your maximum comfortable volume, then gradually revert to your original, softer volume.
Take a breath, think of a word like “who”, “where”, or “whah”, say it out aloud and don’t allow the vowel sound to finish. Keep the sound going (or resonating) for as long as possible – even after the count of one second you will be singing.

Practice keeping the back of your mouth open when you vocalize the vowels. Practice voicing the “ng” sound in training; the back of your mouth is closed. Now practice voicing the “ah” sound, like you’re opening your mouth at the dentist. The back of your mouth is now open.

However in the US, unlike European nations such as Germany and England, the choir system for kids in school has been all but obliterated. Added to that lack, kids emulate the pop music they buy on CD, which doesn’t essentially develop a young voice properly. So we’re in a catch 22 about voice lessons and kids. But here are some guideposts:
One of the things I am constantly teaching my private clients is that the voice is an instrument inside your body and you have to learn how to use it to get the most out of it. It’s very “physical” on the foundational level. To have a strong voice and to have vocal consistency there are certain things you have to know and do. There are some really simple methods you can use, right now, to get a great sound out of your instrument.
In addition to noticing your diaphragm move, think about your jaw, lips, tongue, cheeks and upper palate. Are they relaxed? What size and shape is the cavity inside your mouth? What happens to the sound if you change it? Make very small changes to consider the effects. Does it please you?
