So far I sing Fly Me to the Moon by Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra we’ll, still need to work on Dynamics, and Soft Attacks on the Power Phrases, but my instructor wants me to learn and practice Against All Odds, holy moly that song is very hard for me, not sure what is holding me back, I realized tonight that the phrases are a lot longer and there is less time to breathe in for the next one, any Suggestions ?? My mind is stuck in trying to impersonate the artist and duplicate their sound vs using my own natural voice.
In addition to noticing your diaphragm move, think about your jaw, lips, tongue, cheeks and upper palate. Are they relaxed? What size and shape is the cavity inside your mouth? What happens to the sound if you change it? Make very small changes to consider the effects. Does it please you?

I’m sad to leave when our two hours are up yet I’m also on a massive high: all that air flowing through your body gives you an endorphin rush not dissimilar to a session in the gym. Have I mastered singing Don’t Stop by the time I leave? Far from it, but I feel I’ve gained a good grasp of the basics. And although I detect an element of sarcasm in my wife’s comments when I get home – “bloody hell, it’s Scott Walker!” – it’s undeniable that a whole range of previously unattainable baritone notes has been opened up to me.
Now that you know your ears and brain are fundamentally capable of telling whether a note is in tune or not, it’s time to address the most likely cause of your difficulty singing in tune: an inability to match pitch with your voice.

Can you match pitch? If so, just try singing single notes, you don’t even have to know how to play piano, just hit one random key at a time try to sing the pitch. (A good place to start is the middle of the piano and go up if you’re a female or down if you’re a male.) Also, sing what you like. It’s a lot easier to do something that you enjoy. I don’t enjoy basketball, so I don’t play/practice it. That doesn’t mean I don’t get any exercise whatsoever, though. I just do what I find enjoyable.
From the time you were born you started picking little words. At that time you could not speak advance words. You could not have a conversation with someone, because you were still a baby. When you grow up gradually you picked up things little by little. You picked the right words and you started having conversations or dialog with somebody else.
A habit I have is to make my voice sound like the singer. (Or sing with someone who sounds like you.) This makes it easier to sing in tune, since the sound waves match more accurately. I sound a lot like TobyMac (you probably don’t) and I have a similar vocal range (mine’s a little higher), so I sing his songs a lot.
In practice this means that if someone played two different notes on a piano, someone with true tone deafness would be unable to tell whether it was the same note or two different notes. Naturally, if that person tried to sing they would have real difficulty because their ears and brain wouldn’t have a clue if they were singing the right notes or not.

Learn to use your nose. Good singing involves partial nasal placement; it is our body’s soundboard. The most important thing I learn, though, is how to breathe properly. When David first asks me to take a deep breath, I instinctively puff out my chest while my stomach contracts. “We’re taught to be tense, to hold ourselves in,” he says, before explaining that the proper way to breathe is to relax, take in air deeply as if into your stomach, and then use this to support your voice as you sing. It can feel counter-intuitive, but with a bit of practice I start to get the hang of it.

@naught101 My criticism isn’t on the contents of the book and I’m not addressing the possibility that it may be wrong, but rather on the presentation of the text (which is archaic and hard to read). Just try and read the text yourself. It’s not good studying to learn from something that’s hard to grok while there are much more suitable books out there written in modern English. Begin with breathing exercises. Breathing exercises will allow you to better control the pitch and duration of your singing. It’s no surprise: singers who can breathe deeply and consistently get better mileage out of their voice.
Hellomy name is Arrolla , I have recently developed rattling in my throat. I’m very frustrated because I can’t get rid of it, at first I thought it was a cold or the flu, but then it stayed for a long time. That is not unusual. It’s sounds like your vocal cords are a bit farther apart which makes a “breathier” sound and the singer has trouble managing the airflow to create volume. The solution is to practice vocal technique scales – in particular “ee” vowels to pull the cords together and be able to sing with more tone and volume.
Ideally you want a program that loosens you up, make you’re voice more flexible, build up your range, and perhaps add new “colors” to your sound. For example, if you can only sing loud or slow, you’ll want to add lighter contrasting tones to make your song emotions more varied. Singing lessons should stretch your range and build breath control and body strength, without interfering with your vocal personality. In fact, lessons should give you more tools to try more unique things! Probably the best thing about lessons is learning how to have power without straining.
