Raspy voices usually come from dehydration so be sure you get a lot of water! 8-10 glasses per day. Cracks happen from allergies and reflux. Stay away from acidic foods (orange juice, marinara sauce and fried foods are the biggest offenders.) 4 good habits would be: If a song is too high: Use your resonant (so-called “head”) voice. It can increase your range about a half octave. (6 semitones exactly, for me) If you have no idea what I mean by head voice, look it up. It’s a bit hard to explain. The other option is to sing louder (but don’t yell) if it is too high. My head voice is very weak, so I sing loud instead. Also, make your consonants clear. (I’m guilty of this one, too! 😄) If you sing into a mic, probably want to use the soft spongy covers for it if you get into this habit. That way you’re s’s won’t make everyone cringe from the high pitch. Don’t freak out if you suddenly sound terrible on one note. The closer you are to being on the correct note the worse it sounds, until our ears can’t hear the difference. And warm up first. Even if that’s singing a scale.

Your chest voice is usually a deep sound produced at the lower part of one’s range. Head voice is softer and more gentle. Likewise, mask voice is a combination of the 2 and you can feel this vibration slightly below the eyes on the bones of your cheeks when you are singing in this register. As if a siren, move the pitch you are singing upward, allowing it to rise. If you go high enough, and depending on where you are with developing your vocal range, you will experience a “break” in the sound of your “siren” where the vocal sound gets cut off. This is natural, and we all have this “break.” The range of your voice before you reached this break was sung in chest register. The sound produced after the break in a softer voice was sung in head register. Mask voice, which is in between the 2 distinguishing principles, was sung throughout the median pitches of your given range, before you reached the “break” point.
