I’d been thinking about voice lessons for years, and finally started about a year ago. My wife found an instructor through the NATS website (National Association of Teachers of Singing) and I definitely recommend finding an instructor who has some kind of real, formal training, and who also has background in the style of music you’re interested in (most formally trained teachers seem to have a background in classical, chorale, and musical theatre, though some also cover pop, jazz, rock and even country). I started out with 30 minute lessons each week for $35 each, and eventually moved to 45 minute lessons at $50 each. Each class covers warm ups and vocal exercises for about 10-15 minutes, then reviewing the current songs with feedback, and occasionally generally discussing technique and style. The instructor also provides sheet music, mp3 recordings of the lessons, and mp3s of the accompaniments.

Be mindful of tempos and keys. Every decade of your adult life (between ages 15-25, again at 25-35 and again after 50) your vocal timbre and range is different. You have to allow for these changes in adjusting keys, tempos and song selection.
Drink plenty of water. Drink lukewarm water for best results, as this will loosen your vocal chords. Give your body time to absorb the water. Avoid dairy products or thick drinks such as smoothies immediately before singing.
Enter a local singing competition. Be reasonable about how you expect to perform; if you’ve been singing for less than 3 months and have no formal training, it’ll be difficult — but that’s what you want, right?

Ugh, I wish I could sing. I want to get into theatre acting (its my first job choice, I do have backups) but being able to sing is something that would really help me as musical theatre is big in the industry (well, where I live, its the only kind of theatre) and yeah. Practice hitting the high notes. High notes are the icing on top of the cake: not always necessary, but really wonderful when done right. You probably already know your range by now, so you also know which high notes you can hit and which ones you can’t. Be sure to practice hitting the ones you can’t yet reach. Practice will make perfect.

Always listen to what you are singing. You can achieve this easily by either plugging one of your ears with your finger or putting your hand in front of your mouth. Do not cover it though. Then, change your pitch slightly until you are certain that you are singing in the right key.
Of course, depending on where you live and other restraints, you may have a limited number of options, and it’s entirely possible the above paragraphs don’t really apply to you. If that’s the case, do the best with whatever you can, but keep in mind if you really want to take your future career to the next level, you’ll need to find better Teachers, which is why many people travel for school. Your first Vocal Coach won’t necessarily make or break your future prospects, but you can still be picky.

In your voice lessons, you will learn how to warm up, extend your range and strengthen you vocal cords just like professional singers. You will work on specific songs in order to perfect your singing, and most students will hear improvement in just a couple weeks.
Sequences such as “Mi Me Ma Mo Mu” up and down the scale will give you practice in opening your mouth, relaxing your throat, and supporting your sound. You don’t want these notes to sound nasal, but rather supported and steady.
There are many good vocal coaches out there but also many bad ones. Many classically trained vocal coaches will tell you to push you diaphram, which can be harmful to your vocal chords. I had a teacher that would always tell me “Singing is an athletic exercise!”. It’s not, it should be very easy. You should never feel tension.
Who doesn’t want more power without strain? This is a simple technique to apply and a bit easier than the one above. All you have to do is to keep your chin pointed slightly down and your pectorals slightly flexed (well sometimes it’s a lot flexed) when you go for more power. Most singers reach forward or lift their chin up to sing with more power. While it may temporarily work, it causes vocal problems. Tipping your chin down not only works better and saves your voice – it actually SOUNDS better! Stand in front of the good ‘ol mirror. Sing an Ah scale up and down in one phrase (1-2-3-4-3-2-1). Press your chin slightly in (point your chin towards the floor) — usually only 1” or so. Don’t let your head bob up as you raise the pitch. Keep it firmly in place. Go all the way up the scale of your voice keeping this position. Notice how your chin wants to move up as you raise your pitch. Keep it planted. This will give you more power and control and eliminate strain. Practice it until it becomes natural!

Warm up your voice in easy ways that do not create strain. Humming is an effective means of warming up, according to VoiceTrainingLessons.com, as is singing the eight notes in the musical scale in various ways. Try singing them in an over-pronounced, exaggerated style. Sing them again with long, drawn out notes and then in short, succinct sounds. The sounds associated with the eight notes you will sing are doh, ray, me, fa, so, la, ti and doh again. While warming up, and throughout your exercises, maintain good posture to improve and protect your voice. Also be sure to sing at a natural pitch and volume. Do not strain or sing forcefully in order to reach a desired tone. Straining may exhaust you, prevent you from hitting the notes you want or even cause damage to your vocal chords.
To aid with the practice of this breathing technique, (which is also used for meditations) place hands on the tummy to feel the correct movements. For men, a tight belt can also be worn to push against.

The training and education of vocal coaches varies widely. Many vocal coaches are former or current professional singers. Some vocal coaches have extensive formal training, such as a Bachelor of Music, a Master of Music, a Conservatory diploma, or degrees in related areas such as foreign languages or diplomas in human kinetics, posture techniques, or breathing methods. My vocal teacher strongly encourages me to sing in low register, saying that is where most commercial songs are ‘located’ and from where shout occurs.
