There are several great range exercises to try as you’re working on scales. These exercises should be part of your warm-up before working on an actual vocal piece. You can find many different warm-up exercises in between singing classes on YouTube.

Sing “mi-mommy-made-me-eat-my-m&ms” on the notes “do re mi fa so fa mi re do.” Start out by singing “mi” while moving the pitch up higher on the notes “do re mi fa.” “Ya” is to be sung on “so fa mi re do.” The note “so” is one pitch higher than “fa,” and therefore, it is necessary to imply on one pitch higher with the word “ya” before going back down the scale. Try to connect the notes and the words sung on the melody in a smooth fashion. This is called legato.

The first part of knowing what group you belong in is your gender. If you are a female, then you are either an alto or soprano. If you are a male, then you are either a tenor or bass. The second part is how high or low your voice is. If you are a female and you’re more comfortable singing at a high pitch rather than a low pitch, then you are a soprano. If you are a female and you’re more comfortable singing at a lower pitch, then you are an alto. If you are a male and you’re more comfortable singing at a higher pitch, then you are a tenor. If you are a male and you’re more comfortable singing at a lower pitch, then you are a bass.

Lessons are usually held once a week, although advanced students may work with their teacher three times or more each week. A teacher is often primarily a voice technique teacher, who teaches you how to sing, or mainly a voice coach, who shows you what to sing to take best advantage of your voice.

You may also see ads for “vocal coaches”. They concentrate on improving your song performance, where a “voice teacher” concentrates on your vocal health and technique. Some piano accompanist’s become great “vocal coaches”.

Hi Christian! Getting your voice to sound good on the microphone is an art unto itself. Try getting a bit closer to the mic and use breath control to control volume to get a better rounder sound (instead of the thin sound that comes from being too far away) and sing with Hearfones to get better control over the sound of your voice http://www.hearfones.com – That’s a start – of course there is a lot more to it. Everyone would love to be able to sing one of these famous singer’s songs and hit every note, but most cannot. Instead, it’s important to understand your own personal range, and keep it in consideration as you’re warming up and selecting repertoire.
Also, if someone seems to be asking for a bit too much per hour — perhaps they don’t have any actual real world experience or you can tell you won’t be working with them for a very long time — feel free to make them an offer lower than what they are asking. You never know when a Singer will accept your bid because they truly need the cash.

Always listen to what you are singing. You can achieve this easily by either plugging one of your ears with your finger or putting your hand in front of your mouth. Do not cover it though. Then, change your pitch slightly until you are certain that you are singing in the right key.
