Hey Samuel, I listened to this from all the way in Australia. I thought it was well put together, the rhythm of the lyrics over the chords was great. I wouldn’t have had the lead guitar doodling in the verse tho. It didn’t seem well put together and the part before both singers dragged a little bit overall I thought it was pretty good and kept me entertained.
A. To a certain extent. And to a certain extent it’s a PR myth. This is how I like to answer that “born with it or not question”…the best and bravest singers are singers first, and students of singing later. Kids who like to sing never shut -up and therefore they grow. The intuitive development gained by singing throughout childhood, i.e. vocal strength, timing, an ear for harmony, and an ear for matching instruments cannot be made up for later- unless they perhaps master a musical instrument as a child. Good singing is more than a great sounding voice. This is why there are successful pros who may not have the most amazing tone, but really take the house down.
Things that vocal coaches will always stress are vowels, enunciation, and breath control. You want to have tall vowels when singing. Put your pointer and middle fingers between your front teeth to give you an idea of how wide your mouth should be. Make sure to over-stress your words. The clearer, the better! When breathing, don’t breathe from your lungs, breathe from your diaphragm instead, near your stomach. Pretend you’re sipping in chocolate milk. That’s where you should breathe from.

If you can’t find any teacher or you are too shy to sing through it, try to practice singing with your friend who loves to hear you sing or loves singing. I have had formal voice lessons during my teenage years. I took choir in college and have had 30+ years of singing and teaching experience. I am the Music Director at my church, directing congregational singing and choir, and I also teach elementary music class once a week in our Christian school. I have only been vocally trained; therefore, I have to hire a pianist to play for the voice lessons I give, so that comes out of what I charge. I have had several students in the last few years ranging in age from 12 to 32. Warm up your voice in easy ways that do not create strain. Humming is an effective means of warming up, according to VoiceTrainingLessons.com, as is singing the eight notes in the musical scale in various ways. Try singing them in an over-pronounced, exaggerated style. Sing them again with long, drawn out notes and then in short, succinct sounds. The sounds associated with the eight notes you will sing are doh, ray, me, fa, so, la, ti and doh again. While warming up, and throughout your exercises, maintain good posture to improve and protect your voice. Also be sure to sing at a natural pitch and volume. Do not strain or sing forcefully in order to reach a desired tone. Straining may exhaust you, prevent you from hitting the notes you want or even cause damage to your vocal chords.
A. Sometimes due to life choices, an adult with all sorts of talent and music training may stop singing for a while. That might be due to family, or fear, or perfectionism, or just not getting enough good luck at the right time. But because the foundation is there, one can pick it up again and get a really good sound together, and probably have a more emotional performance from all that life experience. I won’t fool you, it is just a little harder to generate contacts to get your foot in the door. But it can be done. Start practicing again.  I say, if you’ve got to do it, then just do it. If you feel comfortable after awhile, ask to join the church choir. Then you can start learning more demanding and challenging vocal music, and you will have an opportunity to learn, practice and rehearse with some structure and some goals in mind, every Wednesday night and Sunday morning, for free.
It doesn’t really matter if you are a Christian or not, or whether you believe the message in the lyrics or not, although it helps. All sorts of musician have gotten their start this way for centuries.
Some musicians are born with a natural “ear” for hearing and matching pitches; others may need a bit of practice, and that’s totally OK! Many singers — even professionals — have a tendency to slide sharp or flat, and it’s something they have to continually practice and correct.
Be mindful of tempos and keys. Every decade of your adult life (between ages 15-25, again at 25-35 and again after 50) your vocal timbre and range is different. You have to allow for these changes in adjusting keys, tempos and song selection.

While there are a bunch of different aspects to a breath management system, the cool thing is that if you get the posture thing, which honestly isn’t that tough, then the rest will begin to fall into place. Drink water. If you think drinking water is only good for physical fitness, newsflash: it’s great for vocal health, too. Load up on the H20 to keep your vocal folds hydrated, healthy, and ready to go. Breath down low and keep good posture.
Once you have healthful singing down, you can structure your practice sessions something like this. Start with a 20-minute warm up session to work on your breath support, low and high range, chest voice and head voice, arpeggios, diction, or vibrato.
Now let’s move on to what the different types of voices are. There are five general categories of voice types. Three are for men and two are for women. We’ll list each voice type here along with a short description of each.
your chest with both hands, then, raise your chest higher than normal. Take a breath in and then exhale, but don’t drop your chest. Sing one note and hold it as long as possible with your chest raised. Press on your chest halfway through the note (press kind of hard and raise your chest to meet the pressure). Relax the back of your neck and keep your jaw open as you’re singing “ahhh.” Imagine the air spinning around in your mouth while keeping your chin tucked down a bit and your chest raised. Keep in mind, overuse of vibrato is not a good thing in contemporary singing (pop, rock, and R&B). At the same time, no vibrato is also not a good thing. So, try ending phrases with straight tone, then into a little bit of vibrato. The bottom line is to do what’s best for you.
To be honest, when you’re hitting the higher notes, you should be shifting from your chest to your head voice anyway, so you asthma is less of a problem for higher notes and more of a problem when singing constantly low. Primatene tablets at Walmart (they’re behind the counter so you have to ask but they’re not prescription) before you sing for a long time will help a lot.

Hi, I’ve been trying for a really long time to make my voice stronger and louder. I can sing high notes and low notes but really softly. If you listen to Get it Right from Glee sung by Lea Michelle she has such a strong voice with a lot of emotion. Do you have any suggestions on how to maybe get closer to that point? Obviously I’m not going to sound exactly like her but I would like to get better. I have had a huge dream of becoming a singer and right now I don’t know how to even achieve that goal.

4 good habits would be: If a song is too high: Use your resonant (so-called “head”) voice. It can increase your range about a half octave. (6 semitones exactly, for me) If you have no idea what I mean by head voice, look it up. It’s a bit hard to explain. The other option is to sing louder (but don’t yell) if it is too high. My head voice is very weak, so I sing loud instead. Also, make your consonants clear. (I’m guilty of this one, too! 😄) If you sing into a mic, probably want to use the soft spongy covers for it if you get into this habit. That way you’re s’s won’t make everyone cringe from the high pitch. Don’t freak out if you suddenly sound terrible on one note. The closer you are to being on the correct note the worse it sounds, until our ears can’t hear the difference. And warm up first. Even if that’s singing a scale.

One last point, and this is a big one. In general, if you are doing anything for your own pleasure, keep in mind you don’t have to be good. (Although I know how great the “being good” feels.) The only person you’d be in competition with is yourself and yourself past, and you’ll always be better than your past as long as you keep practicing, just as good as your are now. Instead of saying, “Holy cow, I’m bad at this,” say, “It was[…] not bad, but there’s always some room for improvement.” And no one better than you would say you’re bad at something. If someone says you’re not good, they’re not any better than you at that or something else. And anything is possible.
Sing the pitches “do re mi fa so mi do.” Sing “zi-ya” on the pitches. “Zi” is to be sung on “do re mi fa” in legato. Make these notes smooth and connected. “Ya” is to be sung on “so mi do.” It is supposedly sung in staccato. Make these notes short and separate, just like you sang “ha.” Putting these concepts together requires practice, as it involves transitioning between concepts. When singing “zi,” try to keep the jaw relaxed. Do not open your mouth too wide. In fact,sing this note with a rounded mouth that is only slightly open. This way, you will achieve a soft sound that is round and full. When you sing “ya,” do not widen the mouth once again. Slightly elongate the shape of your mouth. Because this also involves arpeggiation to some extent, it is always best to leave your hand on your diaphragm.
