Hellomy name is Arrolla , I have recently developed rattling in my throat. I’m very frustrated because I can’t get rid of it, at first I thought it was a cold or the flu, but then it stayed for a long time. I now am afraid that my voice will have this phelmy sound.I’m currently trying eucalyptus oil in the air that helps a lot, but I’m wondering if you have some other ideas that I could use. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.
Relax. Don’t discourage him from practicing “because he’s going to learn bad habits.” That’s like saying to a kid who wants to play basketball, “don’t practice before you make the team, because you’re going to teach yourself bad habits.” Actually having practiced before seeing a teacher will make what the teacher says make a lot more sense/have relevance/be easier to learn. – bobobobo Jun 3 ’12 at 1:37
A quick look at local colleges versus Ivy League institutions will show you there can sometimes be a huge gap between those Teachers and Professors who have studied a certain field and those who have actually lived it. It’s wonderful to have a degree that makes one more educated about a specific subject, but it’s those who have actually succeeded in the business as Background Singers, Session Singers, Opera Singers, and so on who often make the best Teachers. They know what is going on in the real world and not just in a book or a classroom.
The next time you sing an ascending vocal scale or you sing a high note,  try thinking of the way an elevator works. A heavy weight is attached to a  pulley and as the weight pulls down, the elevator actually goes up to the higher floors. So, the highest floor is reached when the weight is the heaviest. Similarly, you should think down for your high notes or think of adding weight (resistance) to your highest notes.
Hey, I know you published this ages ago, but I hope you will still see and hopefully answer this question. Is this course just for people with absolutely no singing skill, or just those looking to improve? Because I have never had lessons, but I naturally have a sense of pitch, my voice is just not very powerful – is it still worth the money? I want to be able to sing better With my guitar.

The basic solfege method is a system of symbols for each of the solfege pitches. The symbol for “do” is a fist. The symbol for “re” is a slanted hand with the side of your hand facing towards you, as should your thumb. Your finger tips should point slightly to the left. The symbol for “mi” is a flat hand as if you were placing it on a desk, and the side of your hand should face you once again, as should your thumb. The symbol for “fa” is a thumb’s down symbol with the inside of your thumb facing outward. The symbol for “so” is a flat hand with the palm facing outward. The symbol for “la” is a cupped hand that faces downward. The symbol for “ti” is a fist with the index finger pointing up and slightly to the left. Then, bring your index finger back into your fist to make “do.” You could attempt to master this method by practicing it over and over to gain the ability to symbol the notes faster. This could be an enjoyable and inspirational way to practice, as it helps to signal the notes while singing each of them. See what works for you. 🙂
It may come as a surprise, but the answer is: yes. Anyone can improve their voice with online singing classes. Many people falsely label themselves as “tone deaf,” when in fact this lifelong condition only affects about four percent of the population.
This is a simple way to practice hitting the right note and singing with good pitching. If you have a digital tuner for your instrument (e.g. a guitar tuner) you can use that, otherwise you can use an online tuner like this one.
Once you have healthful singing down, you can structure your practice sessions something like this. Start with a 20-minute warm up session to work on your breath support, low and high range, chest voice and head voice, arpeggios, diction, or vibrato.

In terms of daily diet, nothing special. If you are talking about what to eat before you sing, try to have a lot of water beforehand. It may not be good to load up on food, since you will be using your diaphragm a lot and it could cause your throat to become dry, irritated, or clogged. Also, avoid foods that produce gas, like soda and large meals. It’s awful when you sing something and you have to burp in the middle of it.
Staying away from caffeine, smoke, and alcohol. Those three substances can damage your voice. If you want to sing well, you have to avoid at least going overboard – drinking too much coffee, chain smoking, and taking in a lot of alcoholic beverages.
I’m nervous when I arrive, but David instantly puts me at ease. I realise that finding a teacher who won’t judge you is crucial, because to get your voice in shape it’s helpful to put yourself through some embarrassing vocal exercises. Such as singing lyrics designed to help you pronounce vowels – never before have I been so passionate over a song about macaroni. Or having to sing while trying to lift David’s grand piano, the resultant strain forcing me to subconsciously belt out the notes with added volume.
You can find online exercises for this, especially increasing your upper range by learning the “mixed voice” register. However, it’s easy to strain your voice if you don’t know how to use your muscles properly. It’s fairly easy to weed out those who really have no idea what they are talking about, but there are some people who can fake sounding smart pretty convincingly. After it’s too late, you’ll find out you’ve made a mistake and by then, you’ve likely already wasted your time and money on the wrong candidate and learned some tactics and techniques that may actually be harmful to your vocal chords. The vocal coaching field is competitive, especially at the highest professional levels. Salaries vary greatly, as do the conditions of work. While a small number of top vocal coaches can command very high hourly or daily rates, most vocal coaches, like most other music and arts professionals, tend to have salaries which are below the average for other professions which require a similar amount of education and experience, such as economists or bank managers. The work conditions vary widely, from part-time or occasional freelance work for individual singers, opera companies, or record companies, to full-time contracts or multi-year jobs for universities (coaching vocal performance students and students in opera courses) or music theater companies.
Begin with your hands on your stomach, placed on top of each other. Breath deeply and serenely through your nose so that the breath makes your stomach expand. As you exhale, your abdomen should contract slightly. Your inhale should be deep to the full capacity extent in order to hold out notes and phrases, and for the purpose of singing in legato. The exhalation should be mellow and slow, conserving every last bit of breath to input into your voice before taking the next breath.
Another good technique to find your vocal range is by singing different songs from different genres. There are many different styles to singing and you will only be able to find which songs your voice are comfortable with and which songs your voices do not clearly reach is by practicing consistently. You can record your songs so you can judge how well you are singing which kind of songs.
It may seem like common knowledge, but it’s important to compare different teachers’ rates with the lesson lengths they offer. Otherwise you could accidentally assume one teacher charging $60 for 60-minute session is twice as expensive as another charging $30 for a 30-minute session, when in reality the per-minute rate is exactly the same.
If one’s musical ear is a contributing factor, one should do ear training for at least 5 minutes at day, focusing on melodic dictation.  Ear training of 5 minutes a day is more effective than 1 hour once a week.

Hey Samuel, I listened to this from all the way in Australia. I thought it was well put together, the rhythm of the lyrics over the chords was great. I wouldn’t have had the lead guitar doodling in the verse tho. It didn’t seem well put together and the part before both singers dragged a little bit overall I thought it was pretty good and kept me entertained.
Without a doubt, you’ll find parts you weren’t happy with. Don’t criticise yourself for this! Every negative thing you notice is an opportunity to improve. Like when you found out you weren’t tone deaf, this just shows that you have the awareness you need to be able to improve. Exciting!
Humming: Highlights anterior frontal vibrations in your lips, teeth and facial bones. Begin with lips gently closed with jaw released. Take an easy breath in and exhale while saying “hum”. Begin with the nasal sound /m/ and gently glide from a high to a low pitch as if you were sighing. Don’t forget your vocal cool down after extensive vocal use. Gently humming feeling the focus of the sound on the lips is an excellent way to cool down the voice. You should hum gentle glides on the sound “m” feeling a tickling vibration in the lip/nose are.

Module 8 is the last module in this course. Well, it’s not the last module because there are supplemental courses included in the Superior Singing Method.
