HI Alex, You are probably a high tenor voice. It’s best to take some voice lessons and learn how to use it to get it sounding as good as it can. Of course, depending on where you live and other restraints, you may have a limited number of options, and it’s entirely possible the above paragraphs don’t really apply to you. If that’s the case, do the best with whatever you can, but keep in mind if you really want to take your future career to the next level, you’ll need to find better Teachers, which is why many people travel for school. The basic solfege method is a system of symbols for each of the solfege pitches. The symbol for “do” is a fist. The symbol for “re” is a slanted hand with the side of your hand facing towards you, as should your thumb. Your finger tips should point slightly to the left. The symbol for “mi” is a flat hand as if you were placing it on a desk, and the side of your hand should face you once again, as should your thumb. The symbol for “fa” is a thumb’s down symbol with the inside of your thumb facing outward. The symbol for “so” is a flat hand with the palm facing outward. The symbol for “la” is a cupped hand that faces downward. The symbol for “ti” is a fist with the index finger pointing up and slightly to the left. Then, bring your index finger back into your fist to make “do.” You could attempt to master this method by practicing it over and over to gain the ability to symbol the notes faster. This could be an enjoyable and inspirational way to practice, as it helps to signal the notes while singing each of them. See what works for you. 🙂
Take a breath, think of a word like “who”, “where”, or “whah”, say it out aloud and don’t allow the vowel sound to finish. Keep the sound going (or resonating) for as long as possible – even after the count of one second you will be singing.

Begin by aiming for just a 3 song repertoire. Pick three songs you like and which are in your comfortable range. It helps to memorise the song lyrics so that you have one less thing to think about as you sing.

After you get a feel for your voice on single pitches or notes apply your knowledge to any song you know. Think about the vowel sound of every word sung and aim for the loveliest version of each one that you can muster. Sing a line at a time. Consider how you attack each word – particularly at the start of a phrase. Try to hit the opening note in the middle of its sweet spot. Also explore what it is to swoop up or down to a note – not always desirable but sometimes interesting.

Even if you’ve never studied music you’re probably familiar with the concept of a “scale”, where a singer sings a series of notes going up in a row and then back down. There are different types of scale and they’re popular as a warmup exercise because they are a gentle way to move your voice across a range of pitches while requiring accurate pitching on each one.
Tone deafness is a real condition. It is part of a biological condition of the brain called amusia which encompasses a number of musical inabilities, including some related to rhythm rather than pitch. As part of amusia, tone deafness means that you are incapable of hearing the differences between musical pitches.
It’s fairly easy to weed out those who really have no idea what they are talking about, but there are some people who can fake sounding smart pretty convincingly. It’s not the obviously unqualified instructors one needs to worry about but rather those who are intelligent enough to pass for knowledgeable. After it’s too late, you’ll find out you’ve made a mistake and by then, you’ve likely already wasted your time and money on the wrong candidate and learned some tactics and techniques that may actually be harmful to your vocal chords. You need to be careful about who you choose in the end, especially if you are just learning how to use and develop your gift.

Drink water. If you think drinking water is only good for physical fitness, newsflash: it’s great for vocal health, too. Load up on the H20 to keep your vocal folds hydrated, healthy, and ready to go. Breath down low and keep good posture.
Humming: Highlights anterior frontal vibrations in your lips, teeth and facial bones. Begin with lips gently closed with jaw released. Take an easy breath in and exhale while saying “hum”. Begin with the nasal sound /m/ and gently glide from a high to a low pitch as if you were sighing. Don’t forget your vocal cool down after extensive vocal use. Gently humming feeling the focus of the sound on the lips is an excellent way to cool down the voice. You should hum gentle glides on the sound “m” feeling a tickling vibration in the lip/nose are.

Move on to thinking about the rest of your body. Where are your shoulders, back, arms, bottom, hips, legs and feet? All these body parts have an effect on your sound. Experiment by moving these body parts differently. What happens?
If you want to learn how to sing better, a good first place to start is with your posture and breathing. While there are a bunch of different aspects to a breath management system, the cool thing is that if you get the posture thing, which honestly isn’t that tough, then the rest will begin to fall into place. So, I’ll say some about both but……
Now for your, starting to get a better sense of pitch, I want you start thinking of your notes as circles. You want to aim for the bullseye. The best way to do this and do it well is to record yourself and listen back. The first thing in determining whether you are singing on pitch is understanding whether you are singing sharp, on the sharp side, or the flat side of the note. I like to take it to the max first. Let’s sing at the center of pitch and then go outside of the pitch, so that you can hear that difference.
You have to work through the modules one by one. You need to practice for a while before you move onto the next module. The course duration is about eight weeks, but you will start to see improvements much sooner than that, just like I did.
