Now that you’ve got correct breathing down, let’s tackle the next important element of great singing. Remember what we said earlier about your body being your instrument? It’s true — and it’s your entire body, from your head to your toes!
To be honest, when you’re hitting the higher notes, you should be shifting from your chest to your head voice anyway, so you asthma is less of a problem for higher notes and more of a problem when singing constantly low. Primatene tablets at Walmart (they’re behind the counter so you have to ask but they’re not prescription) before you sing for a long time will help a lot.
According to a couple of websites, the best way to learn how to sing is with a vocal teacher, a recorder, and practice. But let’s say I don’t have the means to get a vocal teacher right now. What other resources are available to me that I can use to sound better?

Hey Shane, I was following the program every day (it was rare that I skipped a day) for 8 weeks, while also singing some of my favorite songs in between on my guitar practice sessions. Starting from the 3rd or 4th week I started feeling the major improvement as well.
This isn’t a “hearing test”, it’s not checking for hearing damage or age-related hearing loss. And don’t worry about whether you have a “musical ear” or not. I was previously occasionally watching a couple of YouTube lessons about singing, but those never really make you stick to something because they lack a systematic approach. Anyway, I started taking singing lessons with a well-known local teacher.

Even if you’ve never studied music you’re probably familiar with the concept of a “scale”, where a singer sings a series of notes going up in a row and then back down. There are different types of scale and they’re popular as a warmup exercise because they are a gentle way to move your voice across a range of pitches while requiring accurate pitching on each one.
The first part of knowing what group you belong in is your gender. If you are a female, then you are either an alto or soprano. If you are a male, then you are either a tenor or bass. The second part is how high or low your voice is. If you are a female and you’re more comfortable singing at a high pitch rather than a low pitch, then you are a soprano. If you are a female and you’re more comfortable singing at a lower pitch, then you are an alto. If you are a male and you’re more comfortable singing at a higher pitch, then you are a tenor. If you are a male and you’re more comfortable singing at a lower pitch, then you are a bass.

Begin with your hands on your stomach, placed on top of each other. Breath deeply and serenely through your nose so that the breath makes your stomach expand. As you exhale, your abdomen should contract slightly. Your inhale should be deep to the full capacity extent in order to hold out notes and phrases, and for the purpose of singing in legato. The exhalation should be mellow and slow, conserving every last bit of breath to input into your voice before taking the next breath.

This is a simple way to practice hitting the right note and singing with good pitching. If you have a digital tuner for your instrument (e.g. a guitar tuner) you can use that, otherwise you can use an online tuner like this one.

Raspy voices usually come from dehydration so be sure you get a lot of water! 8-10 glasses per day. Cracks happen from allergies and reflux. Stay away from acidic foods (orange juice, marinara sauce and fried foods are the biggest offenders.)
