My teaching approach: I tailor my lessons to fit the students goals. Beginner students want to learn songs, not theory. So I get the student playing /singing before I focus on scales and theory. I want to teach the student what they want to learn as well as giving them the skills to be a good musician/vocalist. I also determine what your learning style is, so that I can effectively teach you in the way you learn best. The distinction between Voice Teacher and Vocal Coach is most apparent in the classical voice/opera community as well as in the Broadway community. The distinction tends to get murkier in the pop/commercial music world and amongst those without traditional voice training.
As @luserdroog said in the comments, it would be best if you could get at least a couple lessons. Otherwise you risk learning bad habits with the physical aspects (that can’t be taught well except in person) that you’ll have to un-learn later.
Best thing you can do is to go to a piano play a note. For example C note and then play it for an half an hour. Then get that particular note or tone to your year. Then you are able to recognize the C note after awhile.

Breath Relaxation: Releases tension often associated in the breathing mechanism that can interfere with effective voice production. Ordinarily, if there is tension when breathing, that tension radiates to the voice box muscles. Take a normal breath and then exhale. Make sure your shoulders and chest are low and relaxed. Repeat many times making sure that your breaths are focused low in the abdomen and that there is not associated chest, neck, or shoulder tension while breathing. You can place one hand on your abdomen to remind you to keep the focus low and away from the chest and shoulders. Hold an “s” sound like in hiss when you exhale. 
I guess I can contribute! I had thoughts of being a singer in the past, I grew up wanting to then I let go for a while after elementary school then tried again in high school and church, also I played around a bit in the streets of Philadelphia with street corner folks, it was interesting!!!! Even until now I had that imagine in my mind, I tried out for one half hour in a lessons class but I felt that I had been let down somewhere(!?) I don’t know what that feeling is but I always want to hear myself and hope that now that I’m older I hope that singing only the church gospel doesn’t just be my pick for starting again! (I’m thinking about it, and there’s a whole lot of music’ s out there, but where to begin, well it’s going to be a chance to take!) networking isn’t what it used to be!

– Not really a con – but the course demands dedication every day (or close to every day) for two months. 10-15 minutes a day is not much and it’s extra time that everyone has, but again – make sure that you really want it and willing to put in the efforts.

The best way to learn to sing is to regularly take classes or lessons from an experienced teacher who can give you the personal instruction and attention that you need to advance in your skills. Another important necessity is to be dedicated to daily practice. With both of these in your routine, your voice will grow stronger, faster.  
Next consider your nose, eyes, eyebrows, face, head and neck. Where are these positioned? Do they move? Are they relaxed? What happens if you raise your eyebrows? Close your eyes? Imagine your head has an invisible string lifting you straight up. Does it make a difference?

Licorice tea or candy (experiment with this, some people get an uncomfortably speedy buzz from licorice), baking soda or salt water gargles (see below), honey, sugar lozenges, steam, certain herbal teas — which teas to drink varies from person to person so experiment.
In the 2000s, the increasing use of recording software which contains vocal processing algorithms and digital pitch correction devices is replacing some of the roles of the vocal coach. In the 1970s, if a producer wanted to record a single with a popular sports star with few vocal skills, the celebrity would need weeks of vocal coaching to learn their song and improve their tone and diction. In the 2000s, the vocals are often processed through pitch correction software instead, and rhythm can be corrected with Pro Tools. This enables 2000s-era producers and audio engineers to in order to make an untrained performer’s singing sound closer to that of a trained vocalist.
Jaw Release: Reduces tension in the mouth and jaw area during speaking and singing. Place the heels of each hand directly below the cheek bone. Pushing in and down from the cheeks to the jaw, massage the facial muscles. Allow your jaw to passively open as you move the hands down the face. Repeat several times.
This happens because your voice actually sounds different to you than other people. This is due to the physics of sound being carried inside your body as well as outside through the air when you hear it. When you hear a recording you are actually hearing what other people hear when you sing.
