I have a degree in music from Abilene Christian University, and have been taking voice lessons since 2005. I have been teaching voice lessons for 2 years, and already I have seen many eager singers come through my door. My students have gone on to audition for and sing in school musicals, bands, and even karaoke in a restaurant! Many of my students take lessons solely to have fun and improve their voices, or even just their breathing. Within the first few lessons (if you’re practicing between lessons, of course!), you will start to notice an improvement in your breathing and as time goes on, you will reap the benefits in your singing! It automatically chooses notes in your comfortable singing range and gives you a range of simple fun exercises to practice matching pitch. And instead of the momentary display of the digital tuner, you can actually see a graph of how your vocal pitch varied over time which gives you a clearer idea of how your pitch skills are developing.
Correct breathing for singers begins with a spontaneous open breath. Upon inhalation, if ones hands are placed on the stomach – an inch below belly button, the hands will be pushed out by stomach muscles. The singer’s shoulders should be relaxed and not move up. Neck and jaw should be relaxed. Jaw needs to be unhinged. Phonation begins with the movement of the stomach inward, where one is singing while pulling the stomach muscles in. This is called “singing on the breath.” The phonation ends with the release of the abdominal muscles. It’s important to note that phonation should be ended with the release of the abs and not in one’s throat, which is vocally abusive.

To aid with the practice of this breathing technique, (which is also used for meditations) place hands on the tummy to feel the correct movements. For men, a tight belt can also be worn to push against.
Each lesson is tailored to the student’s unique needs. I use music that will suit the student’s voice and experience level, and will help the student to improve in certain areas. Also, I allow students to bring in their own music that they would like to work on. I have had students bring in music for upcoming auditions, church solos, and even pieces solely for entertainment.
In addition, if you haven’t taken any singing classes or lessons previously, then you might not know your full range. Your vocal range can change drastically as you learn how to sing, so don’t jump to conclusions until you’ve had some training.
Beyond that, improving your singing tone is best done with the help of a professional. Since there are many reasons your tone could be suffering, working with a voice teacher can help you identify what you need to work on — whether that’s insufficient breathing, a limited range, or understanding how to first attack a note or phrase.

Try practicing holding a note and keeping it steady and clear, using your diaphragm. But controlling your voice is all about learning your vocal strengths and building on them. Practice, practice, practice! What worked for me was picking a song that fit my vocal range and tone, then singing along with that. Recording yourself practicing is great, because then you can listen back and look at the areas where you could have been stronger, or held a note more clearly, then repeat. I guarantee after the first few recordings you’ll notice the difference. I have a very soft voice, but have been able to strengthen it.
Before you rush to figure out what type of singing voice you have, there are two things to keep in mind. Firstly, if you’re a male under 22, or a female under 20, then your vocal range is still developing and you won’t know your true voice type until you’re a little bit older.
Hey, I’m a producer not a singer, so pardon me if this answer is a bit on the lines of “A Man with a Hammer sees every problem as a nail”. Maybe part of the problem is the recording and not your voice at all. Firstly everyone’s voice sounds weird to them when they first hear it recorded. That’s something you just need to get used to. Also, if your voice sounds “Unnatural” it might be because the way you are recording it has no reverb. You can fix that by standing further from the mic (especially if you’re standing in a church), or by getting some freebie music recording software that will add artifical reverb. Unless you have a good mic and know what you are doing, you’ll probably get a better result doing it in software. You might want to try adding some compression too. Once you realize you can get a better recorded sound, hopefully that will make you more confident singing live.

You really are better at anything you do when you do it with confidence, I haven’t haven’t sang in a while since I lost my guitar but I use to have half@sssd confidence in it. I started singing again tonight and was confident anything is achievable if you set your mind (also had a lot of complements about my ability which helps) and I have been singing better then I ever have before, all day today. When you don’t believe in your abilities you don’t give it your all, the key is believing in yourself completely so can give it everything you have, without sabotaging yourself due to worry that your best isn’t good enough. Your mind is your own best friend and worst enemy.
Hey Shane, I was following the program every day (it was rare that I skipped a day) for 8 weeks, while also singing some of my favorite songs in between on my guitar practice sessions. Starting from the 3rd or 4th week I started feeling the major improvement as well.
