A. You are not alone in that wish. If you have a creative bone in your body, you’ll feel this way. You need to interview prospective voice teachers and tell them this. Try to find a teacher who will diagnose your basic problems in how you produce sound, but not pass judgment on the style. I say this because depending on the city you live in, you may have access to teachers who specialize, as performers, in one style more than another. New York is flush with teachers who are professional classical or theater singers, and LA is packed to the gills with teachers who make a living in the recording industry. But a good teacher- even one who’s sings differently from you- should develop you in a way that is appropriate for your voice type and applicable to your style.
Not all singing lessons are created equal. If you have a specific singing style you would like to learn, look for it on your potential teachers’ lists of specialties. Examples include Broadway, country, gospel, classical, jazz, opera, choir, music performance, stage performance, musical theater, and ear training.

Also, Aimee is a teacher during and after the lesson. Be mindful of tempos and keys. Every decade of your adult life (between ages 15-25, again at 25-35 and again after 50) your vocal timbre and range is different. You have to allow for these changes in adjusting keys, tempos and song selection.
Remember that learning how to use your voice is like learning any musical instrument – and it’s not instant. So while you WILL see tremendous results very fast, these 60 days are not the end of your journey – but only the beginning.

Close your eyes, and sing whatever comes….. twist the lyrics of already known songs, and use your current feelings. I bet youre trying to imitate other singers voices. This is a quick trick that makes you sound better instantly. Say A-E-I-O-U (watch your jaw movement in the mirror). Did your jaw close on any of the vowels? Chances are your jaw closed on the E and the U – and most likely on others too, if not all of them. Take your first two fingers and pull your jaw down 2 inches (or even better – use a plastic bottle cap or a cork (wine) to prop your jaw open). And speak the vowels again. And repeat again (we’re trying to re-program muscle memory – so the more the better). Now sing the vowels on one pitch. A-E-I-O-U. Your goal is to keep your jaw open (long not wide) without closing for all of your vowels. Repeat until you can do it. Now sing a phrase of one of your songs – and make sure your jaw opens to the same position on all of your vowels. You have to practice this a bunch before it becomes natural – but the more you do, the sooner this new movement is programmed into your muscle memory. And, you might be one of those lucky ones who notice the improvement in the sound right away (it will sound louder and more resonant with less vocal strain). If you don’t – don’t sweat it – you will. It just takes a little practice. (You might have some unwanted tension in your neck, jaw and throat muscles – try loosening them up and try it again.) The next time you perform open your jaw more on your vowels — it’s a quick trick that makes you sound better instantly!

The vocal coaching field is competitive, especially at the highest professional levels. Salaries vary greatly, as do the conditions of work. While a small number of top vocal coaches can command very high hourly or daily rates, most vocal coaches, like most other music and arts professionals, tend to have salaries which are below the average for other professions which require a similar amount of education and experience, such as economists or bank managers. The work conditions vary widely, from part-time or occasional freelance work for individual singers, opera companies, or record companies, to full-time contracts or multi-year jobs for universities (coaching vocal performance students and students in opera courses) or music theater companies.
While a lot of people have found the product useful in improving their voice, it’s not perfect. While the instructions are clear, it requires discipline and determination to succeed. This isn’t a magic trick that will instantly turn you into a world class singer, as you still need to train.
Practice keeping the back of your mouth open when you vocalize the vowels. Practice voicing the “ng” sound in training; the back of your mouth is closed. Now practice voicing the “ah” sound, like you’re opening your mouth at the dentist. The back of your mouth is now open.
There is no absolute guideline to learning how to sing. If you want to sing well, you have to continuously and religiously practice, follow a training program that’s right for you, and try to develop your existing talents, with hopes of honing even new ones (new styles of singing, that is).
Vocal coaches may also come to their profession through other routes, such as related musical professions or from other fields. Some vocal coaches, for example, are rehearsal pianists with decades of experience accompanying singers, or former or current choral, music theater, or symphony conductors. More rarely, vocal coaches may come to the profession from a non-musical route. For example, a specialist in Alexander Technique, yoga, or medical aspects of the throat and vocal cords may begin to specialize in coaching and training singers.
