You are basically becoming a voice athlete – and just like any other athletic training, you can’t just take a pill and all of a sudden be strong or great. You need good training and a good vocal coach.

I started playing recognizable melodies on the piano at 18 months old. At that time I was told that I even had perfect pitch. By age 5, my mother started giving me classical, gospel, and improvisational lessons. I was one of her 50 students until my senior year in high school. Through elementary, junior high, and high school, I received a lot of performance experience from school marching/concert bands, choirs, church choirs, piano concerts, band/choral conducting, and composing.
Digitally or through online singing lessons (e.g., via Skype or Facetime) in which audio or video is transmitted of the instructor singing and the student imitates the instructor. The instructor can also hear the student sing and provide coaching on her or his singing. In most cases, there is a small delay in the audio transmitted during digital voice lessons so the instructor is not able to actively accompany the student. Instead, the voice teacher plays a tone or chord and demonstrates the scale or exercises which he wishes for the student to sing. The student then imitates the instructor. The instructor can then modulate the scale upwards while the student follows singing the same scale pattern.

The vocal coaching field is competitive, especially at the highest professional levels. Salaries vary greatly, as do the conditions of work. For beginning piano students at the pre-reading level (ages 3-6ish) I like to use the Faber “My First Piano Adventure” series. I love that this series enforces solid technique in a fun, child-friendly way.
The most important thing I learn, though, is how to breathe properly. When David first asks me to take a deep breath, I instinctively puff out my chest while my stomach contracts. “We’re taught to be tense, to hold ourselves in,” he says, before explaining that the proper way to breathe is to relax, take in air deeply as if into your stomach, and then use this to support your voice as you sing. It can feel counter-intuitive, but with a bit of practice I start to get the hang of it.
Your chest voice is usually a deep sound produced at the lower part of one’s range. Head voice is softer and more gentle. Likewise, mask voice is a combination of the 2 and you can feel this vibration slightly below the eyes on the bones of your cheeks when you are singing in this register. Registers are simply the prospect of getting as many parts of your body in vibration as you sing. You will be able to know which register you are in because there is something called a “break” in your voice from one register to the next. Sing a note that is in the lower end of your range. As if a siren, move the pitch you are singing upward, allowing it to rise. If you go high enough, and depending on where you are with developing your vocal range, you will experience a “break” in the sound of your “siren” where the vocal sound gets cut off. This is natural, and we all have this “break.” The range of your voice before you reached this break was sung in chest register. The sound produced after the break in a softer voice was sung in head register. Mask voice, which is in between the 2 distinguishing principles, was sung throughout the median pitches of your given range, before you reached the “break” point.
Most teacher offer varying lesson lengths, starting at 30 minutes. This is often recommended for beginners, but you’ll want to check with your teacher to see what he or she suggests. 45- and 60-minute sessions are the the most popular length, as it allows for adequate time for warming up before getting to more complex exercises and songs.

Sequences such as “Mi Me Ma Mo Mu” up and down the scale will give you practice in opening your mouth, relaxing your throat, and supporting your sound. You don’t want these notes to sound nasal, but rather supported and steady.
I finished the Superior Singing Method course two years ago, in early 2015, and it was really the kickstart to my singing. Yes there is. Most singers have breaks in their voice. You have to strengthen that area by exercising your voice with specific vocal exercises while holding your jaw down to lower the larynx. It is a process. First and foremost, I am a vocal performer myself, having performed in Italy, Germany, France, Sweden and Switzerland. I have had a successful tour of the Pacific, performing for our troops., and I have performed throughout the contiguous United States. I hold a bachelor of music degree from the North Carolina School of Arts, Winston-Salem, NC, and did a year of master’s degree work at the famed Juilliard School in New York City.
This is as true when it comes to business or writing or almost any other field as it is for singing, and it’s important to keep this in mind when looking for a Vocal Coach. Would you rather train with someone who has spent many years exclusively teaching young people how to sing or with someone who was actually a professional Singer for many years and who then transitioned into being a Teacher or Professor? Ideally, your coach would have tons of experience in both roles, but that’s difficult to find and if you have to choose just one, go for the latter.
