Practice hitting the high notes. High notes are the icing on top of the cake: not always necessary, but really wonderful when done right. You probably already know your range by now, so you also know which high notes you can hit and which ones you can’t. Be sure to practice hitting the ones you can’t yet reach. Practice will make perfect.

You can find online exercises for this, especially increasing your upper range by learning the “mixed voice” register. However, it’s easy to strain your voice if you don’t know how to use your muscles properly. It’s best to ask a vocal coach for guidance, or to learn the amazing things you can do with your current range.
Everything you do and learn as a singer builds your musicianship. Do you think Beyonce just woke up one day and knew how to do amazing licks and trills? No, she had to work at it. She had to build up her musicianship and her musical knowledge of what notes work with what chords, and how to use licks and trills effectively in songs.
This happens because your voice actually sounds different to you than other people. This is due to the physics of sound being carried inside your body as well as outside through the air when you hear it. When you hear a recording you are actually hearing what other people hear when you sing.
Yes! In fact, our online students typically stick with their lessons 10% longer than local students. Why? Convenience and quality. You can take lessons with any teacher, anywhere in the country… all without leaving your home.
As an instructor, I have been blessed with an ability to be relatable, relevant, musical, creative, fun, and engaging. I understand the language of music as a performer, and instructor, but most importantly, I value the ability to help the student find their own path of learning the joy of making music vocally and instrumentally. With over 18 years of private teaching experience and 30 years of group experience, I have gained a wealth of knowledge on how to be instructive and personal with the young or older beginner, intermediate and even advanced players. Let’s grow together musically.
Can you identify the caller on your phone? Then you can identify music notes. If you can identify notes then you can sing. If you can sing a note then you can play an instrument. Very soon you will be performing on stage and get ten out of ten or all three Yes from the judges. Let me clear you.
If you’re quiet, muffled, or sloppy, the message and story of the song can get lost. Moreover, some singers don’t even recognize when they have poor diction. This is where recording yourself while singing, or getting feedback from a voice teacher, can make a huge difference.

Joel is not only an outstanding musician, he is also a great teacher! I had the pleasure of taking piano lessons from him and enjoyed every minute of it and learned a ton. His instruction was a wonderful supplement to what I learned at the University. His is very knowledgeable, competent technically and hilarious! In addition to everything he offers musically, he is one of the best people I’ve ever known. Thank you Joel, for sharing your gifts!
For experienced vocalists, especially those that have already had several years of live performing under their belts, there are certainly some good tips and exercise strategies you can learn from these programs. After all, there isn’t an old dog I’ve met yet that can’t learn new tricks (despite what the old saying might have you believe).
Cari Cole is a celebrity vocal coach and artist development expert who has worked with some of the biggest names in the entertainment business. From Grammy winners and American Idol finalists to rock star legends and emerging artists, Cari’s formula works.
Are testimonials from students positive? A top quality vocal instructor would have the skills to match the impressive credentials on his/her resume. You should have confirmation of how a vocal teacher has and that can only come from former and current students. Simple searches for the names of these students can go a look way in determining what kind of teacher a vocal coach really is.
Practice scales. Practice these often, especially if pitch gives you some trouble. Most coaches will recommend 20-30 minutes a day when starting out, as practicing scales will also strengthen the muscles used for singing. Buff voice muscles will give you better control. To practice scales, identify your range (tenor, baritone, alto, soprano, etc.) and know how to find the notes that cover your range on a keyboard or piano. Then, practice the major scales in every key, moving up and down using the vowel sounds.
You can read more about me and my own experiences in the about page by clicking the link at the top of this page. I am or have been a member at many online vocal tutoring programs and can tell you which I believe are the best places to master the art of singing.
The average cost of 60-minute singing lessons in Dallas is $73. While the exact cost will vary depending on the teacher, type of lesson, and your location, you should expect to spend anywhere between $40 and $277 per hour.

Finally, don’t be surprised if most voice teachers work you out with a smoother approach…I hesitate to use the word, Classical, to make you turn and run….but most good teachers have had some classical training in their background. It doesn’t mean you have to sound that way yourself. But in fact, clear, melodic, scales and jumping exercises on 3/4 power will make all singers perform better, especially those with aggressive songs. Oh yes, I believe a teacher should help you become independent, so that you understand what you are doing right, and how to do it consistently.

But getting to this point has not just happened all by itself. I deliberately worked toward this goal of powering up my voice by using certain techniques that forced my sound to change in this direction.
You know, I am actually writing a new voice technique book and have been researching online singing sources. You should take one-on-one lessons with a voice teacher so you can have immediate feedback, but if you are looking for a fun and knowledgable series of voice lessons online I would check out New York Vocal Coaching Voice Lessons to the World with Justin Stoney
I love holiday music and am taking a group holiday a capella class. It’s a group of about half a dozen people, meeting 6 times (plus 1 make-up lesson and at least 3 performances). It’s 200 for the class, so about $33 a lesson.

He has helped me understand the mechanics behind my voice and how it works. Each week is filled with tons of helpful information and goals to work on. Roger is an amazing teacher! Each lesson felt like my own private lesson!”
Quality lessons on how to sing better are easier to come across if you know where to look. These hardly ever grow out of popularity because of their convenience, availability, and cost. Vocal coaches will charge whatever they want since the demand is often more than the supply. It is a different story when a vocal coach develops his/her own set of modules and make it available online.
3 stars because it doesn’t always work… all the sudden my pitch won’t show up on the screen…. that it kind of the whole point. This seems to be because of a sort of crackling that makes it try to decide between a really low pitch or high pitch and it ends up just giving up. I would blame this on the headphones, but they’re from Apple and do very clear audio recordings. Or it just won’t work at all. But normally, the dot will move and twitch between a really low pitch and the pitch I’m actually at
Relax. Don’t discourage him from practicing “because he’s going to learn bad habits.” That’s like saying to a kid who wants to play basketball, “don’t practice before you make the team, because you’re going to teach yourself bad habits.” Actually having practiced before seeing a teacher will make what the teacher says make a lot more sense/have relevance/be easier to learn. – bobobobo Jun 3 ’12 at 1:37

Move on to thinking about the rest of your body. Where are your shoulders, back, arms, bottom, hips, legs and feet? All these body parts have an effect on your sound. Experiment by moving these body parts differently. What happens?
This is not a problem as it better suits a more rocky, harder edged sound that I prefer to give when I’m performing live in the band. But I lose out on the softer songs I was once able to cover well.
There are lots of advantages to learning how to be a singer online. Not least of those being that you can do the course in your own time when you have the time to devote to yourself and not be pinned down to someone else’s schedule!
Your voice is a delicate instrument. While a pianist can practice for hours upon hours every day, singers cannot. Why? Unlike other instruments, the entire vocal apparatus is a sensitive part of your body.
