It’s important that you don’t get frustrated. Don’t try and rush it. Building your musicianship will take time and energy, but it’s well worth the effort because it can take you from being a good singer to a great singer.
If you’re quiet, muffled, or sloppy, the message and story of the song can get lost. Moreover, some singers don’t even recognize when they have poor diction. This is where recording yourself while singing, or getting feedback from a voice teacher, can make a huge difference.
Keep in mind that if you’ve never taken singing classes or lessons, you will have a much more limited range than a trained singer, especially when it comes to the upper range. So be careful not to wrongly label your voice as “low” until you’ve had some proper training.
Hello! My name is Kelsi Phillips and I love music. Music is everything to me. It’s why I get out of bed in the morning, and something I love even more than just listening to it, is playing it. I love it and I would love to share my passion for it with you. We can do anything we put our minds to and I believe that if you want to become the best musician in the world, you can! I teach everything by ear, I don’t read music. But a lot of people can’t do that which is amazing in my book. But I will do the best I can to help you on this journey to learning the greatness of music.
Arguably, training vocally in a music school or studio with a professional voice teacher is a more personal approach to learn how to sing for beginners. However, taking singing classes online can be a great alternative with very similar end results. Keep reading to understand why.
If you’re committed to improving your voice and learning how to sing well, you probably already know that there’s a lot more to it than just taking a deep breath and recalling the lyrics to your favorite songs.

Drink plenty of water. Drink lukewarm water for best results, as this will loosen your vocal chords. Give your body time to absorb the water. Avoid dairy products or thick drinks such as smoothies immediately before singing.

Each voice type (soprano, tenor, bass, etc.) has a different vocal range associated with it. Simply stated, your vocal range is the span from the lowest note to the highest note your voice can produce.
Developed by William Thorpe, an engineer and scientist, who spent several years working at the National Voice Centre and the School of Communication Sciences in the University of Sydney in Australia, doing research into how people sing – the physiology of their breathing, the acoustic patterns of vocal projection, and other aspects of singing performance. The tool uses computer software and your own microphone to measure your current performance and provides new skills to improve.

Marjorie is a delight. From the moment I walked in she had a smile on her face and I felt very welcome. From just one lesson she showed me techniques that extremely enhanced my voice with no pressure on the throat. I had not really sung for ten years and I felt like my voice is still there. It made me very happy. I am using the techniques daily until our next appointment. I highly recommend her!
Most people who take private singing lessons only take one lesson a week. If they found themselves a good pro coach, the lessons should be recorded to reference your improvements and that’s exactly what you need to do yourself.
No. Look for more convenient options on the internet if necessary. Normally, it’s just about practice. If you want a singing coach, but can’t afford one, look for group singing lessons or see if you have a friend who would like to go in on lessons with you.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of lowering pitch or transposing to an higher key? Does it affect your voice? I sing every night with my band, so I usually lower the key of some of my songs.
Practice keeping the back of your mouth open when you vocalize the vowels. Practice voicing the “ng” sound in training; the back of your mouth is closed. Now practice voicing the “ah” sound, like you’re opening your mouth at the dentist. The back of your mouth is now open.

You can now sign up for singing lessons online instead of going the conventional route and studying with a teacher at a music academy. The old way of taking singing lessons costs a lot of money and time for transportation and additional expenses such as meals or snacks before and/or after each session. Additionally, the student has to adjust to the vocal instructor’s schedule.
Fun app with good live feedback on your pitch on exercises and overlay of your voice with the song. A few suggestions: let the user adjust the levels of their recorded playback and the snippet of the actual song independently, let the user scrub back to replay an earlier recorded section, let the user stop performing the song early if they choose, add a save button to previous recordings. The buttons for the iPhone X could be larger or otherwise more responsive. I’m also having some trouble with my mic disconnecting or coming in and out, and I don’t think it’s a hardware issue since I can pull up another app and record fine when I encounter the issue mid performance. More song choice would also be welcome.
Try singing along to a song that you like with a voice recorder nearby. Make sure the music is quiet and your voice is the real thing that the recorder picks up. After you’re done singing, check if you are singing on key. Also check to see if you are:
Do as many or as few hours per day as you want. Practice and study whenever you want, not during the allotted hours of a tutor. Save time and money by being able to learn from home, and not having to travel for singing lessons.
Basically, you need to record yourself and practice often. If your like me, you will hate the sound of your own voice at first. Don’t worry, you will get better. Most importantly, don’t hurt yourself. If you find a teacher that claims singing is “athletic”, find a new teacher.
After you get used to it you’ll start to be able to hear how good your voice truly is, and this is where recording yourself becomes a powerful secret weapon. You can hear where your pitching is off and then correct it next time. You can hear when your enunciation isn’t quite right and then improve it. You can start to form an objective opinion about how good a singer you are.
Work on dynamics. If your heart has ever beat a little faster when a song transitions from a soft melody to a loud, emotional chorus, you probably understand the power of dynamics. The more you practice, the louder and softer you’ll be able to sing healthily. Start singing a comfortable pitch and then crescendo to loud then decrescendo to soft. When you start out, you will probably only be able to sing from mp (mezzo piano or moderately quiet) to mf (mezzo forte or moderately loud), but your range will increase with practice.
My goal for my students is to grow in their love for music, while building a strong foundation of musical skill. I own and teach from my commercial studio in Midlothian, Perfect Pitch Music Academy (www.perfectpitchmusicacademy.com), as well as a second studio in Duncanville. My studio offers piano, voice and guitars lessons. We have three recitals throughout the year. My students have fun during lessons while at the same time learning the musical theory and technique needed to progress!
Yes! Recording yourself singing and then listening to the recording will allow you to catch any mistakes. Remember to keep the music soft so that you can hear your voice distinctly. Read on for another quiz question.
I’ve spent thousands of dollars on singing education in the last 10 years. Both for singing lessons online and tutors. That investment led me into a singing career where I could hit the high notes every time, have a strong voice where I could sing on stage for hours, 7 nights a week.
Private singing lessons and vocal coaching focus on vocal health, breath control, blending the registers, flexibility, range, increasing resonance and projection in addition to building a rich song repertoire. Deborah listens to each voice and strives to bring out the innate vocal potential of every singer. Each voice will blossom forth freely with a safe and healthy vocal technique, which will ensure longevity. Singing lessons will bring out the best in your voice.
A vocal coach didn’t really seem like a good option. I wanted to be a REAL singer – someone who did this professionally. And being from a small town (read: not New York or LA) I didn’t think any of the local song coaches could take me to that level.
Take lessons from a professional. If you are dedicated to singing, consider taking professional lessons. Find a vocal coach or qualified voice teacher who can help you become the singer you want to be. Check with your local music store or your school music teacher for trustworthy references.
My teaching style is very laid back, although goal-oriented. We have fun while seeing progress. For piano, I typically use the Alfred Series “Alfred Basics 1 – 6” or the Adult All-in-One for the Older Beginner. In the first 3 – 6 months, one will become familiar with basis technics and concepts behind creating music. These concepts will be the foundation behind learning how to read music, play by ear, and create your own songs in any style.
