Whether it’s been your lifelong dream to have a beautiful voice, or you want to impress your friends in the choir, or you think American Idol is in your future, your singing voice won’t improve on it’s own. Traditionally, the few people that could afford it would hire expensive voice coaches to improve their voice, pitch, and breathing. After hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars, they would usually emerge with a better singing voice.
If you want to learn to sing it is really a two-fold process. First, there is the aspect of knowledge, not only about the voice and how it works but also certain tips and tricks that will help you avoid pitfalls, protect you from creating bad habits and increase your ability to sing—and all this more quickly than just doing some vocal exercises that may or may not be the right kind. The next step is to work on your vocal power. Vocal power requires proper breathing and diaphragm control. Add some breathing exercises to your daily warm-up, and pay attention to correct positioning of your jaw, mouth, and body to help with this.
Theory and Ear-training I feel are very important to learn when trying to understand music. It just gives you a basic mathematical way of understanding how music works. It can be very frustrating to learn and takes some time to sink in so if you don’t want to learn it then that is great. Ear-training is cool because when you start to understand it you can actually hear music and not just listen to it. You can listen to a chord progression on the radio and go home and play it and also improvise over it.

Your singing voice is greatly affected by your posture and state of muscles. This is why it’s imperative that you avoid putting your body under tension. If your body is in any way distressed, it will be reflected when you sing and your singing voice won’t be excellent. Being relaxed will help you sound very good when you sing. The posture to adopt in order to achieve an excellent voice when you sing is to stand erect, look forward, keep your shoulders relaxed, and space out your feet so that they are parallel to your shoulders. Ensure your back is straight. The right singing posture will help you to avoid unnecessary muscle tension and thus making your singing sound very good.
