Most musicians love to sing along to the songs they play on their guitar or any other instrument. Some guitar players focus entirely and solely on their instrument and that’s perfect, but there’s also the breed who loves to sing and play their hearts out. We all know those few amazing singers who are famous for their wide vocal ranges – Mariah Carey for her five octaves, Ariana Grande for her full voice and head voice notes, and Toni Braxton for those low sultry notes.
Once you have healthful singing down, you can structure your practice sessions something like this. Start with a 20-minute warm up session to work on your breath support, low and high range, chest voice and head voice, arpeggios, diction, or vibrato.
Your voice box, the mechanism in your throat that you use to generate sound, is composed mostly of muscle (and cartilage).  This is good news because just as you can go to the gym and develop the other muscles in your body, there are specific exercises that you can do with your voice to develop the muscles in your voice. And the result is a better singing voice!

Even professional singers have to practice everyday to maintain their level. Singing is an exercise, and to do it well requires practice. If you want to go run a race, for example, you train beforehand. You run daily, stretch, read about running, and immerse yourself into a sort of running world. If you do run a race without training, you might simply run out of breath and have to walk. You might even have to stop altogether, or worse yet, you might get injured. In the same way, you shouldn’t attempt to sing at a ‘trained’ level until you have practiced, reflected, stretched, and actually sung quite a bit on your own or with a tutor or instructor. Only in this way will you excel.
Here’s an extra tip: don’t throw the recordings away! Save each one, putting the song name and today’s date in the filename. Then, after a few days of practicing a song, come back and listen to one of your earlier performances. You’ll most likely be able to hear a big improvement and that will encourage you to keep at it.

Let’s start out by explaining what we mean by “not overdoing it.” With singing, how you practice matters just as much as what you practice. Our best advice is to practice singing healthfully. Singing healthfully, or singing without unnecessary tension or effort, will increase your stamina.
Whether it be a specific genre, general, academic reading or repertoire, just not wanting to stumble over words or just wanting to play or sing the songs you enjoy, I have the curriculum and supplemental material to reach your reading or music goals!
I read, write, and play all styles and I focus on teaching the student fundamentals that work in all styles of music ….AND I get them going on the style they are interested in – pop, rock, country, folk, etc.
Inhale slowly and suspend your breath for a second or two, then let the air out with a steady “hiss” sound. Listen to the hiss and make sure there are no bursts of air making the hiss louder or faster. Keep your exhalation steady.
Online courses have been tested by thousands of students. Private tutors may only have 20 or 30 students per week. But online singing lessons have been honed and improved based on extensive user feedback. Private tutors just don’t have enough students to get enough feedback.
The next step is to work on your vocal power. Vocal power requires proper breathing and diaphragm control. Add some breathing exercises to your daily warm-up, and pay attention to correct positioning of your jaw, mouth, and body to help with this.
I am classically trained, but I have a variety of music influences such as classic rock, jazz and folk music. I want my students to be able to learn the basic fundamentals music theory and be able to explore all kinds of genres and music styles.
After you get used to it you’ll start to be able to hear how good your voice truly is, and this is where recording yourself becomes a powerful secret weapon. You can hear where your pitching is off and then correct it next time. You can hear when your enunciation isn’t quite right and then improve it. You can start to form an objective opinion about how good a singer you are.

Many vocal auditions, competitions, and scholarship opportunities are based, at least partly, on a music theory exam or assessment. So learning music theory also opens up opportunities for you as a music student and a competitor.
You’ve learned all the basics, and you’ve been listening to all the greats for inspiration, but remember: you simply cannot expect to improve without regular practice! Practice singing everyday, if possible.
For the next 20 minutes, study a song to learn the melody and rhythm. While memorizing the lyrics, work on your diction, pronunciation, and vocal tone. And finally, for the last 20 minutes you can practice vocal techniques including ear training, harmony, and sight reading.
Of course there are a lot of free vocal lessons on Youtube that you can learn from, but if you want a systematic approach with a step by step plan that will improve and build your voice gradually to a better place then these methods are worth to check out.
I was ok at staying in tune. But some singers also struggle with that too. But they think singing in tune is a “natural talent” that some people just don’t have. “Natural Talent” is a mis-leading term.
I know that for me, I enjoy getting to put the spotlight on my students. I also like haveing concerts for my students to be able to demonstrate their skills for their friends and family. I also can work with students of any age, starting at about age 5 through age 100+. My experiences with teaching children gives me the ability to teach even very young students.
