Now it’s important to note that there are two different types of vocal exercises, but I’ll say more about that in a minute. First, I want to talk about the actual knowledge part of singing, which is important because with the right knowledge you can increase your singing ability dramatically and almost immediately, once you apply that knowledge. Of course you can improve your singing with vocal exercises, especially when doing both types, and I fully recommend doing them. Many people have difficulty singing in tune at all, while others can start off okay but then can’t hold a tune or gradually start hitting wrong notes or wandering out of key. Although we would say that these people have a bad voice or are fundamentally a bad singer, this isn’t a permanent trait – it’s simply that they haven’t yet learned to sing in tune.
Okay, let’s talk for a second about the two different types of vocal lessons. The first are vocal warm ups. These are great for the purpose they serve, which is to wake your voice up and prepare it for more strenuous activity—singing! They are great for maximizing your current vocal ability and range. Vocal warm ups can be compared to stretching before working out or before a race.

Once you have healthful singing down, you can structure your practice sessions something like this. Start with a 20-minute warm up session to work on your breath support, low and high range, chest voice and head voice, arpeggios, diction, or vibrato.
And don’t be discouraged. The amount of time you need to spend developing your voice, and the amount of information you need to know to get started, is probably much less than you think. Of course this kind of thing doesn’t happen overnight, but if you really want to make it happen it will be there before you know it!
Even professional singers have to practice everyday to maintain their level. Singing is an exercise, and to do it well requires practice. If you want to go run a race, for example, you train beforehand. You run daily, stretch, read about running, and immerse yourself into a sort of running world. If you do run a race without training, you might simply run out of breath and have to walk. You might even have to stop altogether, or worse yet, you might get injured. In the same way, you shouldn’t attempt to sing at a ‘trained’ level until you have practiced, reflected, stretched, and actually sung quite a bit on your own or with a tutor or instructor. Only in this way will you excel.

A very useful framework for practising vocal control is solfa (a.k.a. “solfege” or “do re mi”). This is a system where you give a name to each note in the scale, which makes it easier to understand which note you’re aiming for each time you change pitch.
Do as many or as few hours per day as you want. Practice and study whenever you want, not during the allotted hours of a tutor. Save time and money by being able to learn from home, and not having to travel for singing lessons.
