The most important thing I learn, though, is how to breathe properly. When David first asks me to take a deep breath, I instinctively puff out my chest while my stomach contracts. “We’re taught to be tense, to hold ourselves in,” he says, before explaining that the proper way to breathe is to relax, take in air deeply as if into your stomach, and then use this to support your voice as you sing. It can feel counter-intuitive, but with a bit of practice I start to get the hang of it.
I’ve taught singing to children, teens, and adults since 2006. My Masters degree training has afforded me the opportunity to be well versed in effective vocal techniques that will help you succeed. There is a common misconception about how to breathe. Some believe that a singer needs to expand their ribcage out horizontally while inhaling. That is incorrect. This will result in various issues such as limited vocal range, pitch problems, a wobbly shaky vibrato and more.

The pressure’s on: standing in front of my audience of six friends, I suddenly know exactly how it feels to be Chris Martin surveying Glastonbury’s Pyramid stage crowd. But the pressure doesn’t last long. Less than a minute into my rendition of Don’t Stop and my friend Jim turns to me: “Have you been taking singing lessons?” For the first time in his life, he doesn’t appear to be taking the piss. Hi… so when I sing I think I sound really good, but then I record it and listen to it and I sound really young (I’m 15, by the way) and shy, and my voice just sounds really unnatural. My choir teacher recently asked me to start cantoring at my church, but I don’t want to sing and then sound like an idiot in front of a few hundred people… Do you have any suggestions to help make my voice sound more natural and confident? Mrs. Lisa was absolutely a joy to work with. My granddaughter was visiting for a few days when she mentioned she would like guitar lessons. A few calls later we had lessons set up with Mrs. Lisa. Michelle was so excited when she finished her first lesson and said, “Mrs. Lisa is just like my Aunt Jenn.. In terms of memorization, think of a song in a simple sequence. If I were trying to memorize the pre-chorus of “Beyond Me”, I would think “first stars, then water, then need, then see.” I learn new songs in under a week this way. (And old songs in 24 hours on the high end.)
Steven has been working with my daughter in piano and singing. The first lesson he discussed with her what she’d like to achieve, and they set goals for them to work towards, which I love. Arms – When you aren’t gesturing, you should be relaxing your arms at your sides. Don’t make fists, clasp your hands, or fidget with your clothes. This adds tension and makes you look (and feel) nervous.
This 10 DVD Vocal Training program is an outstanding product. The course comprehensively explains different aspects of harnessing and mastering singing in a soulful style. Vocal Mastery covers the fundamentals, but you will also learn advanced stuff such as riffs, runs, and more. Even experienced singers are likely to pick up new tricks from the program.
I have checked out many reviews of the Superior Singing Method and the majority of them are very positive. Miss Alba wrote a review at myhowtosingbetter.blogspot.com and she said “there is no singing guide that has made as much of an impact as the Superior Singing Method” and that the lessons are very easy to understand.
Students who already have a wide vocal range and the ability to match pitch will progress faster than those who weren’t born with these talents. Either way, each of these talents can be developed with the right amount of practice.
Enter a local singing competition. Be reasonable about how you expect to perform; if you’ve been singing for less than 3 months and have no formal training, it’ll be difficult — but that’s what you want, right?
Next consider your nose, eyes, eyebrows, face, head and neck. Where are these positioned? Do they move? Are they relaxed? What happens if you raise your eyebrows? Close your eyes? Imagine your head has an invisible string lifting you straight up. Does it make a difference?
