Vocal strengthening exercises are designed to push your voice and increase its ability. To continue with the analogy, they would be the workout or the race, whereas the vocal warm ups are the stretch, the warm up.
I encourage BEGINNERS through EXPERT to at least hear what I have to say. I have A LOT of information to give about the guitar. I played for ten years made 2 demo CDs, one full length album, another demo specifically for Metal Blade Records, was in a big cover band and so I thought I knew it all and was a great guitar player. Then I went to GUITAR SCHOOL in Hollywood and reality hit me.
Your posture is a key part of singing and breath-management. If you’re hunched over or sitting down or even just slouchy, you can potentially cut your breath support, and therefore your ability to sing well, in half. I won’t get into all the details of it here, but the basic idea is to keep your chest/sternum high and intake air so that your torso expands below the ribs, on your sides near your oblique muscles, and your lower back, not necessarily just in your belly.
The key to this exercise is to make sure you are listening carefully as you practice. Don’t just rely on the tuner’s display. Try to always hear whether you are too high or too low before checking the display. That way you are gradually developing your own inner tuner so that in future your feedback loop can work directly without the assistance of a digital tuner.
You can practice singing scales like this as part of developing vocal control. Remember to choose scales which lie in your comfortable range. If that means you can only sing part of the scale, that’s fine. Remember you are just using this as a way of practising your vocal control.
