How great is it to play your instrument and sing to your songs with confidence. Singing along with your instrument adds an extra dimension to the experience. You now have two instruments (your voice is also an instrument) that complement each other.
Now, it’s important to do the warm ups before doing the strengthening exercises, of course, because you don’t want to add unnecessary strain to your voice or even damage it. Just like you would never see a runner refuse to stretch his or her legs before a race, it’s unwise to jump right into performance singing or strengthening exercises without having readied your voice with warm up exercises.

A lot of breathing exercises incorporate singing different sounds on pitches and working up and down the scale. Making sure you breathe from your belly and support your voice throughout the entire exercise is the key to power.
Locate your diaphragm below your chest and above your belly – buried behind muscle, but detectable when you notice your chest expanding as you inhale. The goal is to direct all of your inhaled air into your balloon-like diaphragm – not your shoulders.
Even a pro singer like me likes to keep up to date on technique. I first had pro singing lessons back in the early 2000’s, but in 2012 I purchased the 4 Pillars of singing course as I was intrigued by Robert’s technique. His training helped me develop my head voice to be more powerful, and helped me remove resistance in my vocal break.

So, how do you strengthen your pitch-matching abilities? One method is simple aural drills. Start by playing a note on a piano to find your pitch. Sing along, and then subtly slide your pitch one way, and then back to the note. You’ll start training your ear to hear the varying pitches.

If you focus only on free lessons from YouTube, I guarantee you will get frustrated. Online lessons give you guidance in a step by step progression, allowing you to move from one exercise or technique to the next. You can’t find this for free on YouTube.
