In my voice lessons, students will learn proper technique in producing sound with their vocal chords. We focus on breathing and tone. Lessons will also incorporate ear-training and vocal exercises to expand vocal range.
Learning how to sing – to really learn how to sing – can take a long time, even a lifetime to master. Some virtuosos out there are able to naturally strike a key or a chord, but they may not know exactly what it is they are doing. They may not understand how their voice is controlled or how they are using their muscles, mouth, vocal chords, body, and thorax to reach a certain level of sound and to maintain that sound for however long necessary.

A proper warm-up is incredibly important before using your voice, as is staying hydrated at all times, which keeps your vocal cords from getting irritated. But vocal warm up exercises are not going to necessarily give your voice a breakthrough making it any better than its current ability. You’re not necessarily going to increase your range, be able to sing higher notes or sustain better pitch by simply doing vocal warm ups. That’s where vocal strengthening exercises come in.
Remember to practice even on your busiest days. As with physical exercise, even a 10-minute workout each day is better than nothing. If you have a commute, try practicing in the car. If you don’t have much time alone, ask your voice teacher for a few quiet exercises that you can do.
And don’t be discouraged. The amount of time you need to spend developing your voice, and the amount of information you need to know to get started, is probably much less than you think. Of course this kind of thing doesn’t happen overnight, but if you really want to make it happen it will be there before you know it!
Your posture is a key part of singing and breath-management. If you’re hunched over or sitting down or even just slouchy, you can potentially cut your breath support, and therefore your ability to sing well, in half. I won’t get into all the details of it here, but the basic idea is to keep your chest/sternum high and intake air so that your torso expands below the ribs, on your sides near your oblique muscles, and your lower back, not necessarily just in your belly.
Singing is a complete system in your body. Only learning certain bits, rather than the whole system, leads to never finding your complete singing voice. Never really having proper technique and never really mastering singing to the level where you can make a full time income singing.
